If scientific research had theme songs—cue up “Under Pressure” for Patrick Morris ’22 with regard to his NASA Space Grant project. The senior biology major’s research is titled “The Effect of Cognitive Demand on Exercise Capacity and Performance” and explores how solving intellectual problems affects people’s ability to perform physical exercise. The findings could have valuable future applications to astronauts and numerous other occupations where quick and accurate decision-making and cognitive skills are essential.

Victoria Vonfrolio ’24 hasn’t told many people about her “quiet dream”: to work for NASA as a researcher. The movie Hidden Figures sparked her interest—the story of three female African-American mathematicians and their vital contributions to the early U.S. space program. Now, the research she is conducting with two GCU professors through a NASA Space Grant could have a role in making her dream a reality.

Georgian Court University plans to apply results from the 2021 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to further cultivate a positive campus environment where everyone feels they belong and has ample opportunities for diversity in the classroom and student life.

Transition and Career Studies students

Last fall, Georgian Court University was awarded a nearly $2.5 million grant for the program through the federal Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities. For qualified students, TCS provides an opportunity to learn in college classrooms, live on the GCU campus, and engage with typically enrolled students through clubs, sports, and campus events. At the end of four years, successful TCS students will receive a Board of Trustees-approved certificate of completion.

Students with intellectual disabilities can go to college. Georgian Court University’s new Pathways to Possibility program is being developed to help them get there, beginning in the fall of 2021.

TRIO–SSS graduates

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Georgian Court a new TRIO–Student Support Services grant for more than $1.69 million over the next five years to help first generation, low-income, and students with disabilities succeed in college and graduate. GCU has been a TRIO–SSS institution for 40 years.

On May 5, CEO of Career Prep Consultants and job search coach Mary Donahue Quinlan led an interactive webinar along with GCU’s Office of Career Services staff to discuss helpful tips and resources for finding a career with graduating students.

Deposit Deadline Extended to June 1

Georgian Court University has extended the deposit deadline to June 1 in response to the U.S. Department of Education announcement concerning delayed data availability from the revised Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
