B.S. in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology

The B.S. in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology is a joint-degree program in cooperation with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). Students complete five semesters at GCU, fulfilling the program's general education requirements and psychology major courses, and then complete the last three semesters at UMDNJ's campus in either Scotch Plains or Stratford.

What is psychiatric rehabilitation?

Psychiatric rehabilitation promotes recovery, full community integration and improved quality of life for persons who have been diagnosed with any mental health condition that seriously impairs their ability to lead meaningful lives. Psychiatric rehabilitation practitioners provide collaborative, person-directed and individualized services that focus on helping individuals develop skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning, and social environments of their choice.

What kind of people would I work with if I chose psychiatric rehabilitation as a career?

Typically, you would be working with individuals who are dealing with severe and persistent mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizoaffective disorder.  Sometimes these individuals also struggle with substance dependence.

What does a psychiatric rehabilitation practitioner do?

  • Help a person find decent housing and learn to live independently
  • Help a person get a job or go back to school
  • Help a person develop social skills, meet new people, have fun
  • Help a person learn to effectively manage the illness
