Rhus copallina
Winged Sumac
Anacardiaceae. 5m.

Shrub with alternate, compound leaves having 7-21 leaflets.  The "wing" (widened leafstalk) between the leaflets is a distinguishing feature of this sumac.  The greenish-white or yellow flowers are in a cluster and appear in mid to late summer.  The fruit is purplish-red and lasts into the winter, with the large clusters at the tops of the stems making the winter shape of this species interesting.  Common in dry sunny areas.  Photographed in Georgian Court University Arboretum.
