Ancestor of cultivated blueberry. Elliptical leaves do not have resin dots underneath (huckleberries, genus Gaylussacia, have resin dots). Young twigs are often bright red. White or pinkish clusters of bell-shaped flowers appear in May. Fruit is blue with a whitish coating (bloom). Particularly common in moist or wet soils. Photographed at Lake Carasaljo Municipal Park.
