Spiranthes tuberosa
Little Ladies'-tresses Orchid
Orchidaceae. 30cm.

Green basal leaves are short and oval-oblong, but often not present until after flowers mature.  Small white flowers are in a spiral at the top of a spike, with small upright leaves clasping the spike, and appear in mid to late summer.  Subterranean tuber is a distinguishing feature, but as the plant is rare it should not be unearthed to see if a tuber is present.  Rare, often found in groups in dry, sandy, sunny fields.  Photographed in field at Georgian Court University.
