Sarracenia purpurea
Pitcher Plant
Sarraceniaceae. 50cm.

Insectivorous plant. Prey fall into openings at top of green, red, and purple-pigmented leaves, which have downward- pointing hairs that hinder prey escape. Base of leaves traps water in which prey may drown and be digested. Leaves form a rosette. One large, odd-shaped, red-purple-green flower appears at the top of a long stalk in mid to late spring. Common in bogs. Photographed at Webbs Mill Bog on Route 539.
