Acer rubrum
Red Maple
Aceraceae. 10m.

Tree with smooth gray bark when young, and darker, furrowed bark when old. Buds, young twigs, flowers (appearing in early spring) and paired, winged seeds (appearing in mid-spring) are often reddish. Leaves have 3-5 (often 3) wide lobes, with shallow notches between the lobes. Common in moist soils, including sides of streams. Photographed on Georgian Court University Nature Trail and Double Trouble State Park.
