Physics

Physics is more than just answering questions about nature. Students become independent thinkers as skills are developed in the acquisition of data, analysis and interpretation of the data, and error analysis.

Students have full access to cutting edge facilities and equipment, such as optics/holography and X-ray laboratories. Students can also take advantage of summer research and fellowship opportunities. GCU is a NASA Educator Resource Center and site for summer NASA Aerospace Teachers Workshops. The physics program fully prepares students to teach physical sciences, work in industry, or pursue graduate study in physics, astrophysics, geophysics, biophysics, or engineering.

The Georgian Court experience includes opportunities for acquiring knowledge of the ways of nature through study of the natural sciences. The physics major presents a four–year program based on a two-year cycle through which students can broaden their knowledge of the physical world and develop an intellectual and professional understanding of it.

Students wishing to obtain employment immediately after graduation may prepare for teaching physical science or for technical work in industry. A major in physics will prepare students for graduate study in practically any field, including medicine, engineering, physics, business, mathematics, astrophysics, geophysics or biophysics.

The Physics Department

• Is convinced that an understanding of the major principles of physics will lead to a better understanding of our world and a greater responsibility to it;
• Is convinced that women should be represented equally with men, in all aspects of scientific endeavor-research, technology and science teaching;
• Believes that an understanding of physics will assist in the confrontation of many of the environmental issues facing human civilization.
• The department encourages students to pursue undergraduate research projects with a faculty member. Our students have been very successful in many fields of study.
• All majors pursuing the BS degree are required to take the ETS Major Field Achievement Test in Physics, or the GRE subject Test.
