H1N1 Update
For several months, you have been hearing reports in the media regarding the H1N1 influenza virus and its impact around the world. We want to share information regarding Georgian Court University’s preparations for this virus. We are working closely with the Ocean County Health Department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning our institution. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available to us. For now, we are doing everything we can to keep our institution operating as usual.
It is important that students, faculty, and staff stay home if feeling ill with symptoms of flu-like illness: cough, sore throat, fever or signs of a fever (chills, flushed appearance, sweating). Other symptoms may include: headache, body aches, fatigue, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.
Please inform Health Services at extension 2774 or 2756 if you have symptoms of flu-like illness.
The university is strongly encouraging all students and staff to be vaccinated for the seasonal flu early this year. We will be sponsoring a seasonal flu clinic on Wednesday, October 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Casino. The cost of the vaccine is $15. For those who are at risk and require the seasonal flu vaccine as soon as possible, please call Health Services at extension 2756 for assistance. The seasonal flu vaccine will also be available to the GCU community in Health Services after October 7 at the same cost.
We also plan to administer the H1N1 vaccine on campus when it becomes available, estimated to be mid- to late October. The vaccine will be administered at no charge.
In addition to staying informed and getting both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccines, other precautions should also be taken:
Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially after coughing or sneezing.
Practice respiratory etiquette by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Know the signs and symptoms of the flu.
Stay home if you have flu or flu-like illness for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medications).
If you have any questions, please go to www.cdc.gov/H1N1FLU/ or call Health Services at extension 2774 or 2756.
