Enrico Mastroianni to Lead Georgian Court University Men’s Basketball
Lakewood, N.J., Aug. 28, 2012—The final piece is now in place at Georgian Court University. GCU Director of Athletics and Recreation Laura B. Liesman announced today that Enrico Mastroianni has been tabbed as the Lions’ first-ever men’s head basketball coach, completing the institution’s coaching staff as it commences coeducational athletics in the fall of 2013.
“I am thrilled to introduce Enrico Mastroianni as the head coach of our initial men’s basketball program,” said Ms. Liesman. “After a thorough search, Coach Mastroianni’s stellar achievement in a short period of time was quite impressive. His keen understanding of what it takes to develop a successful student-athlete, both on and off the court, makes him a perfect fit here at GCU. I am confident he has what it takes to establish a competitive men’s program in the very near future.”
Mastroianni, who will lead the Lions into action for the first time in 2013–14, joins Georgian Court after serving the past four seasons as the head coach of Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey. A member of NCAA Division III and the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), Mastroianni leaves as the all-time wins leader in program history, guiding the team to 45 victories, including 32 conference wins, and two Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournaments. He registered 13 victories in his first season at the helm of the Cyclones in 2008–09 while securing the team’s first postseason berth in 12 seasons.
Coach Mastroianni has been instrumental in developing his players, which is evident in their 14 All-Conference awards, including three First-Team honors, five Second-Team accolades, and three Honorable Mentions. He was named Centenary’s Coach of the Year in 2009 and has coached three 1,000-point scorers
“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to be the first men's basketball coach in Georgian Court University history,” stated Coach Mastroianni. “I would like to thank Laura (Liesman) and the search committee for having faith in me to build this program and lead it into the future. Our recruiting efforts will be consistent with GCU’s Mercy mission, and we will strive to support excellence in academics and athletics. My goal is to not only build a program that has success on the court but also one that prepares these young men for success in life.”
Prior to his tenure at Centenary, Coach Mastroianni served four seasons as associate head coach and head JV coach at Division III Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania, where he served on the 2007–08 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Coaching Staff of the Year and coached five All-Conference student-athletes.
Coach Mastroianni is a 1999 graduate of Penn State University, where he completed his undergraduate degree in marketing and international business. In 2007, he completed his Master of Science in Education degree at Misericordia University.
