Painting the Outdoors: GCU Offers Plein Air Art Course
Lakewood, N.J., Sept. 16, 2011—Join professional artists Lizzi Schippert, NJWCS, and her husband, Sven Widen, on Mondays in October for an opportunity to paint and sketch on the beautiful and historic Lakewood campus of Georgian Court University. The campus provides many views of interest to the artist, including the Italian Garden with classical sculptures, the Japanese Garden and Teahouse, the Formal Garden with labyrinth, the Sunken Garden, the Lagoon and its lake views, and numerous native and exotic trees.
En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air,” specifically with regard to painting outdoors. Just as Monet and Cézanne made nature their painting studio, Ms. Schippert and Mr. Widen will guide you in understanding and depicting the elements of landscape—perspective, light, and color—in the drawing or painting media of your choice. All experience levels and all drawing or painting media are welcome. This workshop is suitable for all people ages 16 and up who are highly motivated and preparing for ongoing studies in the visual arts. Workshop activities are paced to relax the novice and refresh the experienced painter.
Classes will be held on four Mondays, October 3, 10, 17, and 24, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The class meeting location will be confirmed with registrants. The cost for all four classes is $115 per person; $95 per McAuley Institute for Lifelong Learning member; and $50 per current GCU student with ID. The cost of materials is not included. Class sizes are very limited; advance registration is required. GCU is certified to bestow professional development hours for teachers as outlined by the Department of Education.
