Paw-sing for Reflection: GCU Holds Blessing of the Animals
Lakewood, N.J., Sept. 15, 2011—On Monday, October 3, Georgian Court University will hold a special Blessing of the Animals in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on the Arts and Science Arcade, the lawn in front of the Arts and Science Center on the Lakewood campus.
Held in honor of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, the event attracts 30 to 40 people and their assorted pets each year, says Kathy Brum of the Office of Campus Ministry. Those pets typically include dogs, cats, and birds, but have also attracted ferrets, horses, rats, foxes, and chickens in past years. This year’s ceremony is being dedicated to the late Father Robert Terentieff, known as “Father T,” a former chaplain and lecturer in art at Georgian Court from 1999 to 2006 and animal lover who had performed the blessing here on campus many times.
The event is open to the public and their pets; however, pet owners are requested to have some method of containing or restraining their four- (or two-) legged companions for safety.
The officiant at the service will be Father Anthony DiPalma, chaplain and campus minister, and Campus Ministry students will also lead prayers and speak of St.Francis and his love of creation and animals. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Office of Campus Ministry at 732.987.2691.
