GCU Artist Shares “Mixed Emotions” in Senior Exhibition
Lakewood, N.J., Apr. 30, 2010—Georgian Court University senior Holly Avilleira doesn’t play favorites—not with her kids and not with the various artistic media that she’s come to love during her studies as an art major at GCU.
“I simply can’t choose one and say ‘This is it. This is the one I love most,’” says the Jackson mother of four who is also the artist behind “Mixed Emotions,” the exhibit that begins Monday, May 10, in the M. Christina Geis Gallery on GCU’s historic Lakewood campus. “There’s something special about each piece of art that speaks to me, whether it is stained glass, ceramics, sculpture, or painting.”
The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, launches with an opening reception on May 10 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Holly’s work will remain on display through May 28 and showcases some of her best and most unique pieces. She’s currently transforming a mannequin—tossed out when a local clothing store closed its doors—into a work of art by affixing cut glass in a range of shimmering hues to the plastic model’s life-sized limbs. Ultimately, the mosaic-style mannequin will resemble a mermaid, she says.
Holly, who graduates in May, says “Mixed Emotions” goes beyond her mixed media approach to art. “As a mom, everything I do is interrupted,” she says. “There are always other things pulling at you, and trying to complete just one thing can be difficult. This exhibit encompasses my life and my style. All of the pieces are so special, and I love something about each of them.”
The collection is one of several exhibits hosted throughout the year in the M. Christina Geis Art Gallery, which spotlights established and up-and-coming artists in diverse media. It is on the second floor of the Arts and Science Center on GCU’s Lakewood campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For information, call Kathleen Settles at 732.987.2388.
