Experience Autumnal Beauty & Local History with a GCU Campus Tour
Lakewood, N.J., Aug. 27, 2009—Learn more about local history this fall with a Tuesday morning tour of the Georgian Court University campus in Lakewood. Guided tours include the historic Mansion, Casino, and Raymond Hall Complex, as well as the unique, lush gardens on the campus grounds.
Georgian Court University's 156-acre Lakewood campus is a National Historic Landmark. Among the historic buildings being toured are the Mansion, the Georgian-style winter home of millionaire George Jay Gould and his family. Dating from the late 1800s, the Mansion and many of the other estate buildings and gardens were designed by Bruce Price, the famous New York architect. The campus is also an arboretum, filled with many exotic tree species as well as some of the largest pine, oak, and fir trees in Ocean County.
The tour takes about 90 minutes and includes approximately 45 minutes of outdoor walking on uneven and partially uphill paths. The walking tour is not wheelchair accessible. In the event of inclement weather, the walking tour will be abbreviated, and a video program will be substituted.
Tours are available on the following Tuesdays: September 15 and October 6 and 13. All tours begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Mansion. Tickets are $10 per person, which includes light refreshments after the tour. Reservations are required.
