Stormy Weather on the Horizon for Georgian Court’s Dramatic Series “Biographies from the Court”—Mrs. Gould Welcomes Billie Holiday
Lakewood, N.J., May 18, 2009—Hear Billie Holiday sing the blues for Georgian Court’s Gilded Age matriarch Edith Gould and a few of her closest friends—you—at this unique interactive theatrical performance and elegant tea party.
This spring, the Gould home will be filled with the sultry tones of the jazz songstress known for her heartbreaking life and heartfelt renditions of such classics as “God Bless the Child” and “My Man.” After honing her vocal skills listening to Bessie Smith and Louie Armstrong, Eleanora Fagan changed her name, moved from Baltimore to New York, and began performing with Count Basie and Artie Shaw. “Lady Day,” as she came to be known, wowed audiences and recorded hundreds of songs, mostly her signature ballads. Her talent allowed her to transcend the prejudices of her time.
Holiday’s unique diction and dramatic intensity made her the outstanding jazz singer of her day. Settle in for tea as “Lady Day” visits with Mrs. Gould and her guests in the Mansion at Georgian Court University in Lakewood on the following dates:
