Light and Color Take Georgian Court “Beyond Practical Realism”
Lakewood, N.J., Nov. 17, 2008—Twenty-five pieces from renowned artist Lea Colie Wight of Manasquan will grace the walls of Georgian Court University’s M. Christina Geis Art Gallery in December. Entitled “Beyond Classical Realism: Paintings of Light and Color,” it will include works in oil on linen, as well as pencil and charcoal. The exhibit, which marks a homecoming of sorts for Ms. Wight, who studied printmaking at the university, opens on Tuesday, December 2, with a reception in the gallery from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The exhibit will run through December 19.
Ms. Wight, who holds a B.F.A. from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, is on the teaching staff of Studio Incamminati, a small, intensive Philadelphia atelier founded by artist Nelson Shanks. She periodically serves as a teaching assistant to Shanks at the Art Students League of New York, and has been honored by the Princeton Art Association. She has shown her work throughout the United States, and recently had two drawings selected for inclusion in a book on classical drawing instruction, featuring artists from the Art Students League of New York. Through painting, Ms. Wight says, “I try to reveal the beauty and the truth I see and hopefully create an intimate connection with the viewer.”
“With lavishly rich colors on linen canvas, the paintings of Lea Colie Wight will transport the viewer to a calming, sumptuous place,” says Kathleen Settles, gallery director. “Her still-life works take everyday objects and display them in an inviting tranquil setting. The balance of soft light and intense color is a tool in the hands of this skilled artist who truly goes beyond classical realism.”
The M. Christina Geis Art Gallery, which showcases the work of established and up-and-coming artists, is located in the Arts and Science Center on the Lakewood campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public during gallery hours, which are 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The gallery is closed on weekends.
