Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) was perhaps the greatest sculptor of the 17th century and an outstanding architect as well. Bernini created the Baroque style of sculpture and developed it to such an extent that other artists are of only minor importance in a discussion of that style. His gifts were realized at the age of 7. By 22, the Neopolitan native was a favorite of popes and royalty. His architectural achievements include the piazza in front of Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Chair of Saint Peter, enjoyed and marveled at by millions each year. Bernini branched out to designing fountains and renovating churches throughout Rome. His patrons outside of Italy included Louis XIV of France and Queen Christina of Sweden.
