Circulation Policy: Student Patrons

The library endeavors to serve students, faculty, administration, staff and alumni, as well as members of the local community who wish to utilize library facilities at Georgian Court University. In order to ensure service to such a large and diverse group of patrons, it is necessary to develop specific operation guidelines. Following are the guidelines for the student patrons.

Library Cards

Full privileges are extended to all students regardless of category. Library privileges for full-time undergraduate students are extended and renewed for the academic year; privileges for graduate students and part-time undergraduates are extended on a semester-by-semester basis.

Your campus ID serves as your library card. It must be activated at the Circulation Desk before use. You will need your card to borrow and renew materials, to request an Interlibrary Loan and to use audiovisual and reserve materials in the library. Please remember that you are responsible for all materials borrowed on your card. DO NOT lend materials you have borrowed to anyone! You are also responsible for becoming informed of and observing library policies.

Graduating students may continue using the library as alumni by presenting their Alumni card and changing their status at the Circulation Desk.

Students may have up to 30 items checked out at any given time.

Loan Periods

Four Weeks: Circulating Books and Machine Readable Data Files (MRDF).

Please note: Student teachers may borrow IMC textbooks on a semester basis. Graduate students may borrow circulating books (with the exception of IMC textbooks and IMC juvenile literature) and MDRF materials on a semester basis.

One Week: Pamphlets from the Vertical File, IMC Activity File, IMC Magazines and audiovisual materials.

Reserve Materials have varying loan periods specified by the instructors: 1 WEEK, 3-DAY, OVERNIGHT or HOURLY (in-library use only). 1 week, 3-day and overnight reserve materials may not be renewed. If another patron is not waiting, hourly materials may be renewed once.

Interlibrary Loan due dates vary and are written on the ILL book sleeve.

Non-Circulating Materials: Reference books, maps, Vital History cassettes, special collections, archives, periodicals, newspapers and microforms.

Circulating Materials, with the exception of a hold or recall, may be renewed twice. Materials can either be renewed at the Circulation Desk or renewed online. Instructions on how to renew online can be obtained at the Circulation Desk.

Recalls, Holds, Missing Items

A RECALL is a request to recall an item from its current borrower. Recalls can only be placed at the Circulation Desk. Recalls should be limited to items considered critical to a students work. Recalled materials are due within 14 days of either a telephone call or the date on a written notice. Overdue recalls are fined $1.00 per day.

A HOLD is a request to be the next borrower when an item is returned. The current borrower will not be permitted to renew an item with a hold. A hold can be requested at the Circulation Desk or online.

Undergraduate students are permitted 7 holds/recalls at any one time; graduate students are permitted 10. No holds or recalls may be placed on reserve items. Students will be notified as soon as any requested material is returned to the library. These items will be held for 7 days after notification.

MISSING BOOKS: students are encouraged to ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk if they are unable to locate items on the shelf. If an item is missing, the library staff will institute a search for the items and the student will be notified when the item is located.

Fines

Fines are charged for every day the library is open including weekends and university vacation periods, beginning with the date due and excluding the date returned. Fines continue to accrue until an item is either returned or the bill is paid ($10.00 maximum). Borrowing privileges will be suspended if a student has more than 7 overdue items or owes more than $5.00. At the end of each academic session, grades and transcripts will be withheld for any student with overdue materials or cumulative fines of $10.00 or more. The library does not routinely send notices for overdue materials or outstanding fines; however, non-receipt of an overdue notice or bill does not excuse responsibility for the overdue item.

Overdue materials are subject to the following fines:

Videos-including reserve $2.00 per day $20.00 max. Hourly reserves

$.50 per hour, $10.00 max.

Reserve, ILL materials

$1.00 per day, $10.00 max.

All other materials

$.10 per day, $10.00 max.

This also applies to library materials accompanied by MRDF (computer disks). A $5.00 processing/replacement fee will be charged for damaged computer disks.

The goal of the library is to provide the best service possible to every one of our patrons. It is hoped that compliance with the above policy will ensure access to materials for all patrons.
