Georgian Court Launches Online Alcohol Awareness Program
Lakewood, N.J., Nov. 30, 2007—In an effort to spread alcohol awareness among campus residents and prevent underage drinking, Georgian Court University launched an online alcohol education program during the Fall 2007 semester. The three-hour course is mandatory for all students, but can be taken at the student’s own pace, over a longer period of time.
Academic studies of underage drinking have shown that it has dire consequences. Nationwide, more than 1,700 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes, and 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol. Georgian Court’s implementation of this program, entitled “Outside the Classroom,” is intended to educate students about the dangers of drinking and to help them make smart choices about alcohol consumption. More than 500 campuses participate in the program.
Outside the Classroom is tailored to progress according to the students’ responses to previous questions, making it appropriate for both nondrinkers and those who choose to consume alcohol. Students who do not complete the course by the end of the semester in which it is started will be prohibited from registering for classes the following semester.
