America’s First Female Spy Reveals Her Secrets at Georgian Court
Lakewood, N.J., Feb. 14, 2008—Join “Anna Smith Strong,” America’s first female spy, as she reveals the secrets of the Revolutionary War’s Culper Spy Ring, on Thursday, March 6, at 6:00 p.m., as part of Georgian Court University’s Conversations across Time series. Be part of this theatrical reenactment by St. George Productions of Medford, New York, and let the story of America’s first female spy take you into the unknown corners of history.
During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington conceived a daring plan to defeat the British. He gathered a clandestine group of seven Patriots who formed the Culper Spy Ring. From New Jersey to New York to Long Island, the Culper Spy Ring secretly acquired vital military movements and covertly conveyed the information to the general. Anna Smith Strong, whose husband was captured by the Redcoats, joined the Culper Spy Ring to ensure his safe return home.
Mrs. Strong used her laundry as a code to indicate when the information could be delivered to the next agent. When an agent was hidden in one of six local coves, Mrs. Strong would hang her black petticoat on her clothesline. She indicated which of the six coves by hanging up handkerchiefs along with the black petticoat.
The performance will take place in the Little Theatre on GCU’s Lakewood campus. Tickets are $5 per person in advance, $10 per person at the door; and free to the GCU community with ID. Reservations are required; for these or more information, please contact the Office of Conferences and Special Events at 732.987.2263 or firstname.lastname@example.org
