Post-baccalaureate Certificate - Associate School Library Media Specialist

“The Associate School Library Media Specialist endorsement is required for anyone who serves as a school library media specialist preschool through 12 under the supervision of a certified school administrator, principal, or supervisor…These media are defined as all print, non-print, and electronic resources including the technologies needed for their use.”  (New Jersey Code) 

To qualify for work as an Associate School Library Media Specialist in New Jersey, you must complete at least 18 graduate credits in library studies in areas specified in the New Jersey Code (6A:9-13-15). In addition, you must either be a certified teacher, possess an instructional Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing, or you must take a coherent sequence of education coursework as outlined in the New Jersey Code. (Georgian Court University does not offer this “coherent sequence of education coursework”)

New Jersey school librarians are not required to take a PRAXIS exam.

Four-year degree form a regionally accredited college/university

Admissions procedure

  1. Completed application - Application Form (PDF) or Online Application 
  2. Check or money order for $40 (nonrefundable) made payable to Georgian Court University
  3. Copy of NJ Teacher Certification (CEAS or Standard Certification only)
  4. Official copy of every undergraduate transcript (and graduate transcript for post-masters certifications)

The Georgian Court University graduate program requires twenty-one credits in educational media with emphasis on: 1) information and media resources organization and retrieval; 2) production of educational media; 3) evaluation, selection, management, and utilization of educational media; 4) integration of educational media through the school curriculum; and 5) a field experience in a school media program. Program can be completed in one academic year!

  • EDC 5016 Media & Technology in the School Program  (3 credits)  
  • EDC 5017 Management of Educational Media Services  (3 credits)
  • EDC 5157 Educational Hypermedia and Multimedia  (3 credits)
  • EDC 5160 Instructional Video Production    (3 credits)
  • EDC 5202 Literature for Children and Youth   (3 credits)
  • EDC 6081/82 Supervised Field Experience in School Library/Media Services
    (3 credits = 75 hours       6 credits = 150 hours)

Program can be completed in one academic year!
