Volunteers Service and Community Outreach
Throughout the year, GCU Campus Ministry strives to identify and address the needs of our campus community, as well as those of Lakewood and beyond. Partnering with churches, pastors, and organizations such as Providence House, Redeem Her, Interfaith Hospitality, and Catholic Charities, we seek to live our Mercy core values.
Backpack Drive (August 25 - September 5)
Help children in need get off to a "smart" start! Campus Ministry hosts a drive within the campus community for school supplies. The supplies benefit underprivileged families in the Lakewood area as they head back to school for the fall. Items collected range from notebooks, pencils, backpacks, and calculators to gift cards to local discount department stores.
Service Project - Visitation Relief Center (Thurs, Sept 18th from 2 to 6 PM)
Contact Campus Ministry to sign up. Spaces are limited. Come along as we join Visitation's relief efforts on behalf of local residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Transportation by school van.
Crop Walk (2:00 pm, October 19)
One of GCU's biggest traditions is participation in the annual Crop Walk of Northern Ocean County. Campus Ministry coordinates GCU students and staff to collect donations from sponsors to help eliminate hunger among our neighbors. On the day of the event, GCU walks in solidarity with hundreds of groups and individuals from around the county. In 2013, 223 volunteers raised nearly $5000 to stop hunger! Volunteers are needed find sponsors and walk.
Thanksgiving Baskets (November 3 - 21)
While we prepare to feast with our families for Thanksgiving, we are ever mindful that many find it difficult to enjoy the same luxury. Thus, Campus Ministry organize this on-campus food drive to provide baskets containing complete holiday dinners to be delivered to grateful families. Volunteers are needed to collect donations and organize baskets and food.
Giving Tree (December 1 - 19)
As Christmas approaches, Campus Ministry distributes small Christmas trees throughout the campus. These trees carry gift tags naming items needed or desired by those who are unable to buy gifts for their families. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to choose an item from the tree, purchase it, and return it to Campus Ministry. Campus Ministry then wraps and distributes the gifts in a campus-wide effort to bring holiday cheer to families across Lakewood. Volunteers are needed to set up trees and to help collect and organize gifts.
AIDS Day Walk (6:30 pm, December 1)
Students from GCU participate in an AIDS candlelight procession and prayer service held in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The funds from an earlier on-campus collection are donated at the event. Volunteers are needed to collect donations and walk in the vigil.
Easter Basket Service Project (March 23 - April 1)
GCU Campus Ministry will collect Easter Baskets to be distributed to area kids. Help spread the sweet joy of Easter by donating Easter baskets filled with Easter candy and other Easter goodies. Baskets and other non-perishable food items should be delivered to Campus Ministry. Volunteers are needed to fill and wrap baskets.
