Pre-Professional Career Training at Georgian Court
Contrary to some students’ perceptions, you can become a doctor, vet or other health professional without being in an explicit pre-medical major. According to the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) the most common undergraduate major for medical school applicants is biology, followed by chemistry. However, it is possible to major in any subject and still be admitted to a professional school, so long as you have the required GPA, volunteer work and have taken the specific biology, chemistry physics and mathematics courses required by the program to which they are applying.
Despite the competitive nature of these fields, many Georgian Court graduates have gone on to successful careers as doctors, chiropractors, dentists, podiatrists, physician assistants and vets. Those students generally report that the course sequence within the Biology Major at Georgian Court gave them the knowledge and laboratory skills to compete effectively with other students within their programs.
Georgian Court’s small classes and personalized attention create a learning environment where students can succeed in achieving the high GPAs required for entrance to professional schools, as well as allowing students to build their resumes with research and internship opportunities. Because of our small class sizes, faculty also get to know the students as individuals, allowing them to write the strong letters of recommendation that are needed for successful admission to such programs. Finally, knowledgeable advisors within the department work with students each semester to ensure that students take the courses that they need in the best possible sequence to allow students to be optimally prepared for the standardized tests (MCAT, GRE, DAT) needed for admission to their desired program.
Our Pre-medical advisors are Dr. Carolyn Bergman and Dr. Brunella Bowditch. Dr. Bergman also advises pre-dental students. Dr. Louise Wootton is our preveterinary advisor. Please feel free to contact them if you have questions about preparing for these careers at Georgian Court University.
Georgian Court also has an active pre-medical club mentored by Dr. Bowditch and Bergman. This club sponsors speakers about medical careers, studying for the MCATs, organizes trips to museums with health related exhibits and sponsors fund raisers with health themes.
