Biology, Allied Health, Clinical Laboratory Sciences
Overview
From molecules to ecosystems, biology is at the forefront of understanding and enhancing our internal and external systems of life. Our programs provide a high-quality, broad-based education for students pursuing biology-based professions, such as medicine and dentistry; careers as professional scientists in biotechnology, pharmaceutical or environmental sciences; or careers as elementary or secondary school teachers. We also offer joint degree programs in allied health technologies and clinical laboratory sciences with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s School of Health Related Professions (UMDNJ–SHRP) for students who want specialized training in health care.
The core curriculum imparts fundamental concepts of biological organization, while teaching basic laboratory, computer, library and scientific writing skills. Your last two years involve advanced elective study, externships, seminars, and independent research with faculty members.
Details
Any student may pursue either the B.S. or B.A. degree. However, the B.S. in Biology is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in Biology or careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, biotechnology, agricultural or environmental sciences. The B.A. in Biology is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in elementary or secondary school teaching. Students who wish to teach at the pre-college level will have biology as their first major, and will have education as their second major. They must fulfill School of Education requirements for teacher certification, and Biology requirements for the B.A. degree.
Students are able to pursue a B.S. in Allied Health Technologies, with a Minor in Biology. This is a joint degree program with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey's School of Health Related Professions (UMDNJ SHRP). Students spend the first three years taking basic science and general education courses. They apply for admission to UMDNJ's SHRP prior to the end of their junior year at Georgian Court University. If accepted, they spend the fourth year taking specialized courses in one of four areas: diagnostic medical sonography, vascular technology, nuclear medicine technology, or respiratory care. Upon successful completion of the fourth year, students earn the B.S. in A.H.T. with a Minor in Biology, jointly awarded by UMDNJ and Georgian Court University. Click here for more information on these career areas and on the UMDNJ portion of the degree program.

Students spend the first three years taking basic science and general education courses. They apply for admission to UMDNJ’s SHRP prior to the end of their junior year at Georgian Court University. If accepted, they spend the fourth year taking specialized courses in one of two areas: medical technology or cytotechnology. Upon successful completion of the fourth year, students earn the B.S. in C.L.S. with a Minor in Biology, jointly awarded by UMDNJ and Georgian Court University. Click here for more information on these career areas and on the UMDNJ portion of the degree program. More information on these careers is also available at http://www.labscience.org.
The Minor in Biology is offered for students who wish to enhance their knowledge of Biology and are majoring in another subject.
The university has articulation agreements with New York Chiropractic College, Jersey Shore Medical Center, and Monmouth Medical Center, whereby qualified students can spend 3 years at Georgian Court University and then enter chiropractic or medical technology programs, and still earn a bachelor's degree in a total of 4 years.
Students interested in marine biology may take courses offered by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium or another institution, and transfer them to Georgian Court University as biology or general elective courses.
The above programs are available through both the Women’s College (Day) and Evening Divisions of the university, except for Allied Health Technologies and Clinical Laboratory Sciences, which are only available for Day students.
The B.S. in Biochemistry program is offered through the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
