08-18-09: GCU Volleyball Tops South Division in CACC Preseason Poll
NEW HAVEN, CT (August 18, 2009) – Georgian Court University and Caldwell College have been selected to win their respective divisions as the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball preseason poll was released today. Caldwell garnered 10 first place votes to top the North Division poll, while Georgian Court was voted first in the South after picking up nine first place nods. The 14 head coaches conducted the voting.
Georgian Court, the defending CACC Champion, returns four All-CACC performers, including first team pick Stephanie Rivera (Toa Alta, PR). The senior middle hitter will be joined by three second team selections in senior libero Ana Cruz (Bayamon, PR), senior setter Lisamary Figueroa (Toa Alta, PR) and senior outside hitter Janelle Murdock (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional). The Lions are seeking their fourth consecutive CACC Championship after upending Philadelphia, 3-0, in last season’s title game. GCU went on to claim the CACC’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a 3-0 triumph over Merrimack College at the East Regional. The Lions have won 51 straight matches against CACC foes, dating back to Oct. 7, 2006.
01-08-09: GCU's Crystal Murdock Featured in Faces of the CACC
Recent Georgian Court University graduate and three-time CACC volleyball champion, Crystal Murdock, is this month's featured student-athlete in "Faces of the CACC" at www.caccathletics.org. Murdock, the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 CACC Volleyball Championship Tournament, graduated from GCU this past December with a degree in Criminal Justice. 12-08-08: Casado Named 2008 Daktronics Division II Third-Team All-American
HILLSDALE, MI- Georgian Court University volleyball's Angie Casado (right) (Sr.-Brick, NJ/Brick Township), the three-time CACC Player of the Year, has been selected as a Daktronics Division II Third-Team All-American, following a vote by sports information directors at NCAA Division II institutions. Casado, who earned All-American Honorable Mention in 2007, is the only player in GCU volleyball history to be selected to an All-American team.
11-24-08: GCU Trio Named to 2008 Daktronics East Region Volleyball Team

Oakdale, NY- Georgian Court University volleyball's Angie Casado (first right) (Sr.-Brick, NJ/Brick Township), the three-time CACC Player of the Year, has been selected to the 2008 Daktronics East All-Region First Team, following a vote by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Earning Second-Team accolades were Ana Cruz (Jr.-Bayamon, PR) and Stephanie Rivera (second right) (Jr.-Toa Alta, PR).
11-21-08: Lions fall to Top-Seed New Haven in NCAA Tournament ... Casado, Figueroa Named to All-Tournament Team
WEST HAVEN, Conn. - A day after winning its first-ever NCAA Tournament game, the season came to an abrupt end for the Georgian Court University volleyball squad as the Lions fell to top-seeded University of New Haven, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-13). The loss, GCU's first in over two months (9/20 @ Dowling) ends the Lions' winning streak at 23. New Haven captured its 26th straight victory and improved to 30-3 on the season, while the Lions end their season with a 32-5 record.
11-20-08: GCU Volleyball Makes History with First-Ever NCAA Tournament Victory ... Top #5 Merrimack, 3-0
NEW HAVEN, CT – The Georgian Court University volleyball squad, after two previous attempts, made history Thursday evening at the University of New Haven by defeating fifth seed Merrimack College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-21), for the volleyball program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. The #4 Lions (32-4) now advance to the NCAA Division East Regional semifinals to take on top-seeded New Haven Friday night at 7:30 PM. The Chargers (29-3) dropped #8 Queens College, 3-0, in the match following the GCU-Merrimack contest.
11-16-08: GCU to take on Merrimack in First Round of NCAA Division II Volleyball East Regional
The CACC-champion Georgian Court University volleyball squad heads to the Nutmeg State of Connecticut this week, where the #4 Lions (31-4) will take on #5 Merrimack College (20-9), the five-seed, in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship. The Lions and the Lady Warriors will face each other for the second time this season on Thursday at top-seed, University of New Haven. The match is scheduled to commence at 5PM.
11-15-08: Three-Peat! GCU Volleyball tops Philadelphia U. to win Third Straight CACC Title
LAKEWOOD, NJ -- Georgian Court University won its third consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 victory over Philadelphia University Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center in Lakewood, NJ. Senior middle hitter Crystal Murdock (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) took home Tournament MVP honors. With the win, Georgian Court has earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. The field will be announced late Sunday night. The Lions are now 31-4 overall this season with 22 consecutive victories.
11-11-08: Smooth Sailing for GCU in CACC Quarterfinals as Lions drop Wilmington, 3-0
All business. That is how the #1-seed Georgian Court University volleyball squad approached Tuesday evening's quarterfinals contest vs. the #4-seed Wilmington University Wildcats. The Lions efficiently breezed to a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-18, 25-9) and will face Bloomfield College at 6:00 PM in the semifinal round of the CACC Championship Tournament Friday evening here at GCU's Wellness Center. Philadelphia University and Caldwell College will take on each other in the night-cap at 8:00 PM, also here at GCU.
11-11-08: 2008 All-CACC Volleyball Team Released ... GCU's Casado Named Player of the Year for a Third Time
NEW HAVEN-- Angie Casado (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) of Georgian Court University has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Volleyball Player of the Year for the third straight season in balloting released today. Georgian Court led all teams with five selections to the first or second team. Joining Casado on the All-CACC First Team is Stephanie Rivera (Jr.-Toa Alta, PR).
Ana Cruz (Jr.-Bayamon, PR) as well as Lisamary Figueroa (Jr.-Toa Alta, PR) and Janelle Murdock (Jr.-Manahawkin, NJ) were selected to the All-CACC Second Team.
11-09-08: Top-Seeded Lions draw #4 Wildcats of Wilmington in CACC Quarterfinals
The Georgian Court University volleyball squad (28-4, 18-0 CACC), having just completed the CACC schedule undefeated for a second consecutive season after a straight-set (3-0) victory at Post University Saturday, will host #4 Wilmington University (19-15, 12-6 CACC) in the South Division Quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament this Tuesday, November 11th at the GCU Wellness Center. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
11-06-08: Lions Topple Chestnut Hill, 3-0 on GCU Senior Night
On a night on which the GCU volleyball squad celebrated the careers of four of its key players, the Lions also continued its dominance over CACC competition (17-0, 27-4 overall) with a 3-0 victory over visiting Chestnut Hill College (2-21, 0-17 CACC) in their final regular season home match of the 2008 campaign at the GCU Wellness Center. Seniors Crystal Murdock (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), Angie Casado (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), Billeny Rivera (Toa Baja, PR), and Claudimary Rivera (San Juan, PR) played an integral role in the Lions' perfect 15-0 record and 18-game winning streak.
11-04-08: GCU Victorious in Intense CACC Battle vs. Wilmington University
The GCU Lions scratched out an intense 3-1 victory over CACC-rival Wilmington University Tuesday night at the Georgian Court University Wellness Center. The Lions cruised through the first two games, 25-18 and 25-16. The Wildcats, however, roared back in game three with an impressive 25-23 win. Wilmington looked as if they may force GCU to a deciding fifth game, something that has yet to happen to the Lions in their new home, but Georgian Court had other thoughts as they fought back and eventually put away the visitors by a score of 26-24 in the fourth and final frame.
10-30-08: Lions Win at Holy Family, 3-1, for 15th Straight Victory
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Georgian Court University women’s volleyball team defeated host Holy Family University, 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match on Thursday night at the HFU's Campus Center. Georgian Court improves its overall record to 24-4 and 14-0 in CACC play. Holy Family is now 20-12 with a 11-3 conference record.
10-29-08: Lions Ranked #4 in Latest NCAA Division II Volleyball Regional Poll
INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Committee has released this week's regional rankings. The rankings include the top 10 teams in each of the eight regions, with records through October 26. The next rankings will be released November 12. Georgian Court University ranks #4 in the East Region.
10-28-08: Lights Out! Lions Bolt Through Lightning of Goldey-Beacom, 3-0
In a nearly perfect performance, the #4 Georgian Court University Lions made quick work of the visiting Goldey-Beacom Lightning (8-15, 4-12 CACC), 3-0, Tuesday night in volleyball action at the GCU Wellness Center. The Lions (23-4, 13-0 CACC) smashed a team hitting percentage of .500 and tallied 38 kills in posting their 14th consecutive victory of the season.
10-25-08: Lions Volleyball Shows Mettle in 3-0 Shutout of Bloomfield College
Don't let the score fool you. The GCU Lions did defeat CACC-rival, Bloomfield College, by the score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-21) on Saturday at the GCU Wellness Center. However, this contest will go down as the toughest match for the Lions thus far on its new home court where they now own an 11-0 record.
10/18/08: Hang Ten! ... Lions go to 10-0 in CACC with Win Over Felician College
After a sluggish start from not playing since last Saturday, the Georgian Court University volleyball squad quickly shook off the rust in Saturday's action vs. Felician College (2-20, 2-7), defeating the visiting Golden Falcons, 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-11). The Lions improve to a perfect 10-0 in CACC action and 20-4 overall.
10/09/08: Lions Volleyball, Casado Golden at Goldey-Beacom ... Blank Lightning, 3-0
Wilmington, DE-The GCU volleyball squad continued its dominance of the CACC (9-0) as the Lions earned a 3-0 rout (25-10, 25-13, 25-15) over the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College (6-11, 2-8 CACC) Thursday night. Senior Angie Casado (right) (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) played her best match of the season, registering a staggering .857 hitting percentage with a game-high 12 kills and zero errors in 14 total attacks, while blasting six serving aces.
10/08/08: Eight in a Row ... First-Place Lions Drop Philly U. in Four Games
The GCU volleyball squad stayed undefeated against CACC competition (8-0) and improved to a perfect 9-0 in their new home, the GCU Wellness Center, as the Lions earned a 3-1 victory (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) over the Lady Rams of Philadelphia University (8-8, 4-2 CACC). With their 14th win in their last 15 matches, the Lions improve to a season-high 13 games over .500 with a record of 17-4.
10/04/08: Lions Register Fourth, Fifth Straight Shutouts with Wins over Caldwell and Chestnut Hill
The GCU Lions volleyball squad strolled through today's tri-match with CACC opponents Caldwell College and Chestnut Hill College defeating both clubs, 3-0, for their fourth and fifth consecutive shutouts. Eight of their last nine wins have been of the shutout variety. The Lions stay undefeated against CACC competition (7-0) and improve to a perfect 8-0 in their new home, the GCU Wellness Center. With their 12th and 13th win in their last 14 matches, the Lions improve to a season-high 12 games over .500 with a record of 16-4.
10/03/08 Lions Shread Tigers of Holy Family in Crucial CACC Volleyball Matchup
In a highly anticipated match-up, the GCU Lions volleyball team made quick work of the visiting Holy Family University Tigers, 3-0, to secure sole possession of first place in the CACC's Southern Division. The Lions stay undefeated against CACC opponents (5-0) and improve to a perfect 6-0 in their new home, the GCU Wellness Center. With their 11th win in their last 12 matches, the Lions improve to a season-high 10 games over .500 with a record of 14-4.
09/30/08: Lions Blank NYIT ... Victorious in 10 of Last 11 Matches
Can you say momentum?The GCU volleyball team has now won 10 of its last 11 matches and improved to a 13-4 overall record after defeating visiting NYIT for the second time in ten days, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21), Tuesday evening. The Lions also beat the Bears, 3-0, on September 20th in a neutral site match at Dowling College.
09/25/08: Volleyball Still Undefeated at Home with Victory over USP
The GCU Lions improved to 4-0 in their new home, the GCU Wellness Center, and advanced to 11-4 (3-0 in CACC) on the season with a 3-1 victory over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (1-9, 1-2) Thursday night. The Lions took the first two games, 25-17 and 25-20, before falling in game three, 25-19. GCU rebounded in game four and solidfied the victory with a 25-17 win.
09/22/08: Walker Still in Contention as NCAA Woman of the Year Nominees Narrowed to Top-9
INDIANAPOLIS – Heather Walker of Georgian Court University, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s (CACC) nominee for the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, has made it to the final nine in the NCAA's selection. The NCAA Woman of the Year will be selected on Saturday, October 18th at a banquet in Indianapolis with Walker and the other eight nominees in attendance.
09/18/08: Lions Wax Wilmington for Fifth Straight Win
NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University were swept by the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Pratt Gymnasium. Georgian Court took the first set 25-15, won the second set, 25-17, and completed the sweep with a 25-23 victory in set three.
09/13/08: Clean Sweep for Lions in Lowell
LOWELL, MA (Sept. 13, 2008) – Georgian Court University captured two matches – defeating UMass Lowell 3-1 and Franklin Pierce 3-1 – and placed three players on the All-Tournament Team Saturday at the UMass Lowell Invitational at the Costello Athletic Center. The Lions, a week after going 1-3 at the Bentley College Invitational, went 3-0 in their return to Massachusetts.
09/11/08: GCU V-Ball Thrives on Home Cooking With 3-0 Shutout Over Queens College
GCU Volleyball improved to 3-0 (4-3 overall) at GCU Arena with a 3-0 shutout of the visiting Lady Knights of Queens College (5-2) Thursday night. After losing three of four matches at last week's Bentley College Invitational in Massachusetts last weekend, the Lions were in dire need of home crowd support as 126 fans were by their sides every step of the way.
09/06/08: GCU Volleyball Goes 1-3 at Bentley Invitational
After commencing the season with a 2-0 record, the GCU volleyball squad still felt that the following weekend would be a true test as they traveled north to Massachusetts to participate in the Bentley College Invitational. The club was correct as the Lions went 1-3 in the event, dropping their record to 3-3 on the young campaign.
08/30/08: Lions Open Wellness Center with Sweep
Home sweet home! That was the sentiment of the GCU Lions as the volleyball squad swept Southern Connecticut State University and Molloy College in the very first athletics event in the new home of the Lions, the state-of-the-art GCU Wellness Center.
08/20/08: Lions' Volleyball Tops South Division in 2008 CACC Preseason Poll
NEW HAVEN, CT – Georgian Court University and Bloomfield College were selected to win their respective divisions for the second consecutive season as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball preseason poll was released today. Bloomfield was a unanimous pick to win the North Division with 78 points. Georgian Court picked up 90 points to top the South Division, while being chosen first on 12 of 13 ballots. The 13 head coaches conducted the voting.
06/25/08: Walker Named CACC Woman of the Year
NEW HAVEN, CT – Heather Walker of Georgian Court University is the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s (CACC) nominee for the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, it was announced today by Commissioner Dan Mara. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Walker played both volleyball and softball for the Lions and she received numerous accolades for her athletic, academic and leadership achievements.
06/12/08: Florez, Fortino, Sito, and Walker Represent GCU on CACC Spring All-Academic Team
Their collegiate careers have ended and they have diplomas in hand, but the kudos continue for the Class of 2008. The CACC announced its Spring All-Academic Team this afternoon, which included Georgian Court University softball seniors Autumn Florez (Manchester, NJ/Manchester), Nicole Fortino (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), Julie Sito (Elyria, OH), and Heather Walker (Hanover, ONT). In fact, this is the third time on this elite list for each of these student-athletes.
