06-17-09: Georgian Court Named NCAA Division II East Region Softball Coaching Staff of the Year

COACHFRANQUET2The Georgian Court University staff of head coach Jeff Franquet (right), assistant coach Carl Taylor and graduate assistant Heather Walker has been selected as the NCAA Division II East Region Coaching Staff of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Wednesday. The Lions enjoyed its most successful campaign in program history, a year in which the CACC champions reached 40 victories (40-17) for the first time and came within one win of advancing to the NCAA Division II College World Series.

 

 

 

06-11-09: GCU Trio Named to CACC Spring All-Academic Team

CACC logoNEW HAVEN, CT- The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) announced its All-Academic team for the 2009 spring athletic season today. Three Georgian Court University student-athletes earned a spot on this elite list, including junior softball player Chelsea Long (left) (Exercise Science-3.51 GPA) and lacrosse players, junior Alley Abbate (center) Business Administration-3.71 GPA) andsophomore Jilian Pennington (right) (Biology-3.58 GPA).

 

 

06-01-09: GCU Softball Ranked #13 in Final NFCA Poll of Season After Coming Within One Win from World Series

051009The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has ranked the Georgian Court University softball squad 13th in its final Top-25 national poll of the 2009 season after the Lions enjoyed its most successful campaign in program history, a year in which the CACC champions reached 40 victories (40-17) for the first time and came within one win of advancing to the NCAA Division II College World Series.

 

 

 

05-26-09: ECAC Announces Division II All-Stars ... Sansevera, Ruch named Pitcher, Rookie of the Year

ECAC logoThe Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2009 Division II Softball All-Star team today. Lions' ace Diana Sansevera (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) was named ECAC Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the ECAC First-Team while freshman Rachel Ruch (2B, Edison, NJ/Edison) earned ECAC Rookie of the Year honors while also garnering a place on the First-Team roster. Other First-Team selections include sophomore Courtney Cuevas (3B, Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) and senior Mallory Kirchner (OF, South Amboy, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick).

05-20-09: Kirchner & Ruch Selected as 2009 Louisville Slugger NFCA First-Team All-Americans ... Join Walker as Only First-Teamers in GCU Softball History

NFCA 2009SALEM, VA-For the second consecutive season, Georgian Court University has earned national recognition as senior Mallory Kirchner (South Amboy, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) and CACC Rookie of the Year Rachel Ruch (Fr.-Edison, NJ/Edison) have earned selection to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II First-Team All-American squad. The duo joins Heather Walker (2008) as the only Division II First-Team All-Americans in the program's history. Daktronics East Region Pitcher of the Year, CACC Pitcher of the Year and CACC Tournament MVP, Diana Sansevera (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney), represents the Lions on the Second Team.

 

 

05-17-09: GCU's Magical Softball Season Comes to Close with 4-0, Game Three Defeat to Top-Ranked Le Moyne College

05-15-09: Georgian Court Softball One Win Away From History with 4-1 Defeat of Top-Seed Le Moyne College in Game One of NCAA Super Regionals

NCAA SoftballSYRACUSE, NY- The #3-seed Georgian Court University Softball Squad now stands one victory away from any their ultimate goal and dream, a spot in the NCAA Division II World Series, as the Lions defeated top-ranked Le Moyne College, 4-1, in Game One of the best-of-three NCAA East Super Regionals, Friday afternoon in Syracuse, NY. Diana Sansevera (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) improved to 27-8 on the campaign and 8-0 in the postseason as she allowed one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven, in the complete game effort. Courtney Cuevas (So.-Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) provided the big offensive blow for the Lions with a two-run home run in the third inning. The victory, GCU's eighth straight and 40th of the year (40-15), snapped Le Moyne's (43-11) 12-game winning streak.

 

 

05-14-09: High Five! ... GCU Softball Lands Five Players on Elite Louisville Slugger NFCA All-Region Team

NFCAThe 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Region Teams were announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday. Each of the eight NFCA Division II Regions presents a 13-member first-team and 13-member second-team comprised of one player per team representing the positions of catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, designated player, utility/pitcher and utility/non-pitcher, plus two pitchers and three outfielders per teams.

The East Region first team is dominated by the two programs that will face off in super-regional play this weekend. Third-seeded Georgian Court leads the way with three firs-team selections including pitcher Diana Sansevera (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney), outfielder Mallory Kirchner (Sr.-South Amboy, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) and Utility/Non-Pitcher Rachel Ruch (Fr.-Edison, NJ/Edison). Top-seeded Le Moyne’s two first teamers, pitcher Jenna Venacore and DP Kelcie Cashel, will lead the Dolphins as they play host to Georgian Court this weekend for the best-of-three series. 05-13-09: Lions' Ace, Diana Sansevera, Named 2009 Daktronics East Region Pitcher of the Year ... Cuevas, Kirchner and Ruch Selected to All-Region Squads

SanseveraBrookville, NY- Diana Sansevera (right) (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) has been named the 2009 Daktronics East Region Pitcher of the Year, which was released this afternoon following a vote by the region's Sports Information Directors. Also a member of the All-Region first team, Sansevera posted a 26-8 overall record with 330 strikeouts, a .191 BAA and 1.54 ERA in 241.1 innings pitched. The CACC Pitcher of the Year and CACC Tournament MVP also owns a record of 7-0 with seven complete games this postseason. Joining Sansevera on the All-Region First Team are teammates, 3B Courtney Cuevas (So.-Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) and LF Mallory Kirchner (Sr.-South Amboy/Cardinal McCarrick). 05-10-09: Whoa, Mama! GCU Softball Advances to NCAA Super Regionals with Mother's Day Triumph over New Haven in East 2 Region Final

051009BROOKVILLE, NY-The #3 seed Georgian Court University softball team (39-15) defeated the #7-seed University of New Haven (34-18) for the second straight day, this time in the NCAA Division II East 2 Region Final, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at C.W. Post University. With the victory, the Lions advance to the Super Regionals for the first time in program history. They will now take on #1 seed Le Moyne College in a best-of-three series, commencing Friday, May 15th in Syracuse, NY with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series in Salem, VA, May 21-25.

05-08-09: Comiskey's Clout Gives #3 GCU 4-2 Triumph over #6 Southern CT State University in Opening Round of NCAA Division II Softball Regional

COMISKEYBROOKVILLE, NY - Jessica Comiskey's (right) (So.-Ewing, NJ/Ewing) two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and would ultimately give the #3-seed Georgian Court University softball team (37-15) a 4-2 victory over #6-seed Southern CT State University (33-15) in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament, Friday afternoon at C.W. 05-06-09: #3 Lions Draw #6 Southern CT University in First Round of NCAA Division II Softball Championship Regional Tournament

NCAA SoftballThe 2009 CACC champion Georgian Court University Lions will make their third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Regional Tournament this Friday afternoon (5/9) when the take on #6-seed Southern Connecticut University (33-14) at 1:30 PM. The Lions, seeded #3, are in the same bracket as #2 C.W. Post University, which will host this weekend's action, as well as #7 University of New Haven.

 

 

05-02-09: GCU Softball wins Second CACC Crown in Three Years with 2-0 Blanking of Caldwell College

Champion Team PicThe #4-seed Georgian Court University softball squad (36-15) won its second CACC Championship in three years (2007) with a 2-0 blanking of #2 Caldwell College (35-16-2), Saturday afternoon in Lakewood, NJ. Lions’ ace, Diana Sansevera (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney), continued her tournament dominance and improved to 23-8 on the year, scattering six hits and striking out four in the complete game victory. In her four tournament starts, the Tournament MVP & 2009 CACC Pitcher of the Year went 4-0 with four complete games, three shutouts, two one-hitters and a 0.25 ERA.

 

 

 

 

 

05-01-09: #4 GCU advances to Third Straight CACC Softball Championship Tournament Finals with 8-2 Defeat of #2 Caldwell College

GCU logoThe Georgian Court University softball team advanced to its third straight CACC Softball Championship Tournament Final with an 8-2 victory over #2 Caldwell College (34-15), Friday afternoon in Lakewood, NJ. Diana Sansevera (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) earned her third victory of the tournament, improving to 22-8 on the year. A day after firing to one-hitters, the 2009 CACC Pitcher of the Year allowed two runs (1 ER) on three hits and two walks, while striking out three in the effort. Sansevera owns a 0.33 ERA in her three postseason starts.

04-29-09: GCU Welcomes Philadelphia Force of the National Pro Fastpitch League for Spring Training & Clinics

GCU logoPhiladelphia ForceJeff Franquet,Head Coach of the Georgian Court University softball program and the National Pro Fastpitch League's Philadelphia Force, has announced that the professional franchise will be holding a week of its 2009 Spring Training on the GCU campus in Lakewood, NJ, May 18-22. The Force and its players will be conducting nightly clinics from Tuesday May 19th to Friday, May 22nd at the Georgian Court softball complex.

Courtney Cuevas (So.-Fords, NJ/Woodbridge), Rachel Ruch (Fr.-Edison, NJ/Edison) and Diana Sansevera (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) earned the accolades with Player of the Week, co-Rookie of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week ending April 26th.

 

 

04-25-09: Lions Split a Pair at CACC-Rival Caldwell College

GCU logoCALDWELL, N.J. - The Georgian Court University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Caldwell College, losing the first game 1-0 before winning Game 2, 14-7. The results give the Cougars a 31-13-2 overall record, including a 19-3 mark in league play. The Lions are now 31-14, 17-7 CACC.

 

 

04-23-09: What's All the Ruchus? GCU 2B leads Lions to Sweep over USP with Two Dingers, Six Runs, and Four RBI

RuchGCU's Rachel Ruch (right) (Fr.-Edison, NJ/Edison) continued to swing a blazing bat as the Lions' rookie slugger enjoyed her second dominating doubleheader of the week, going 6-for-7 with two homers, six runs scored, and four RBI in a sweep of the University of the Sciences, 13-2 (5 innings) and 9-2, Thursday afternoon in Lakewood, NJ. Including Tuesday's effort against Chestnut Hill College, Ruch is 11-for-14 (.786) with three dingers, nine runs scored and nine RBI over her last four games.

Rachel Ruch (second right) (Fr.-Edison, NJ/Edison) posted a 5-for-7 effort with a home run and five RBI and Courtney Cuevas (first right) (So.-Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) went 3-for-6 with two homers and six RBI in leading the Lions' offensive attack.

 

 

 

 

04-18-09: GCU Softball Soars Past Eagles of Post University, 5-4 and 6-1

Kirchner 200th hitThe GCU Lions softball team compiled a much-needed doubleheader sweep as the home squad got past the CACC-rival Post University Eagles, 5-4 and 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Lakewood, NJ. Mallory Kirchner's (right) (Sr.-South Amboy, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) single to left field in the 6th inning of Game Two marked the 200th hit of her career at GCU. Georgian Court improves to 26-11 (12-4 CACC) while Post falls to 19-15 and 7-9 in conference.

 

 

 

 

 

 

04-14-09: GCU Softball and Lacrosse Contests Postponed Due to Rain

UmbrellaTuesday's Georgian Court University Lacrosse and Softball contests, both scheduled to be played at Holy Family University, have been postponed due to rain. The HFU-GCU lacrosse match will now take place on Wednesday (4/15), commencing at 4:00 PM. This marks the second postponement of the softball doubleheader between the two schools. The twin-bill, originally scheduled for April 7th, will now be played this Friday (4/17) at 1:00 PM.

 

 

 

04-13-09: Rotten Eggs! ... Lions Softball Splits Disappointing Easter Break Double-Dip with Nyack College

CCUEVASThe Georgian Court University softball squad, ranked #14 in the nation by the NFCA, suffered a very discouraging doubleheader split with Nyack College Monday afternoon, losing the opener, 5-3, to the Warriors before salvaging the nightcap, 7-1. Nyack improves to 3-21 on the year (3-11 CACC). The Lions move to 23-10 (9-3).

 

 

 

 

04-11-09: GCU-Nyack DH Postponed Due to Rain ... Rescheduled for Monday at 3:00 PM

UmbrellaToday's CACC softball doubleheader between Georgian Court University and visiting Nyack College has been postponed due to rain. The twin-bill has been rescheduled and will now take place on Monday afternoon on the GCU campus with the first game scheduled to commence at 3:00 PM.

In other news, the Lions' doubleheader at Holy Family University has been rescheduled for this Tuesday (4/14) at 3:00 PM. The contests were originally postponed on April 7th because of poor field conditions.

 

 

04-09-09: Lions Softball Takes Pair from Wildcats of Wilmington University

GCU logoNEW CASTLE, DE – The visiting Lions of Georgian Court University swept a pair of games from the host Wildcats of Wilmington University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Thursday afternoon. Georgian Court won the opener by a score of 8-1 and completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

 

 

04-07-09: GCU Softball Alumna, Michelle DePolo, Named Head Softball Coach at Army

Army logo 1WEST POINT, N.Y. -  Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson announced on April 1st that Georgian Court University alumna and standout pitcher, Michelle DePolo, will become the eighth head coach in Army Softball history. DePolo is in her second season as an assistant coach at West Point, and will assume her new role on July 1. She will be the program’s first female head coach since moving to Division I in 1991.

 

 

 

04-07-09: Today's Softball Twin-Bill at Holy Family University Postponed

GCU logoToday's Georgian Court University softball doubleheader at Holy Family University has been postponed due to poor field conditions after Monday's rain. A make-up date will be announced at a later date. The Lions hope to take the diamond again this Thursday (4/9) when they travel to Wilmington University for a twin-bill at 3:00 PM.

 

 

 

04-02-09: GCU Softball to Host Second Annual Go to Bat for Breast Cancer Tournament this Weekend

GCU logoLAKEWOOD, NJ- The second annual Georgian Court University “Go to Bat for Breast Cancer” Softball Tournament will be held this weekend, Saturday, April 4th and Sunday, April, 5th. The goal of the event, which has increased from six to nine teams in 2009 (GCU, NYIT, University of Bridgeport, Dowling College, Caldwell College, Dominican College, Queens College, Molloy College, Kutztown University), is to raise awareness and support women in their fight against breast cancer. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

03-28-09: Lions Refuse to Sleep ... GCU outlasts Felician College in Thrilling Doubleheader

SANSERVA2BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Georgian Court University won a pair of extra-inning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball games from host Felician College on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Park. Georgian Court, ranked No. 20 in the latest national Division II coaches’ poll, took Game 1, 1-0, in nine innings, before earning a 6-4, 11-inning victory in Game 2.

 

 

 

 

03-27-09: GCU Softball Strikes Gold ... Sweeps Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College

The thunder was in Stephanie Cuevas's (right) (Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) bat as the senior slugger went 5-for-7 with three RBI, a run scored, and a game-clinching knock in the Lions' doubleheader sweep of the visiting Goldey-Beacom Lightning, 8-0 (6 inn.) and 7-1. GCU improves to 15-7 overall and 3-1 in CACC competition. Goldey-Beacom falls to 11-9 (2-4 CACC).

 

 

 

 

03-25-09: Thursday's GCU-Goldey Beacom Softball Game Postponed Due to Impending Rain

UmbrellaThursday's CACC softball doubleheader between Georgian Court University and visiting Goldey-Beacom College has been postponed due to impending rain. As of this writing, there is an 80% chance of precipitation at gametime. The twin-bill has been rescheduled and will now take place on Friday afternoon on the GCU campus with the first game scheduled to commence at 3:00 PM.

 

 

 

03-24-09: Split Personality? Lions Softball Shakes off Game One Blanking with Game Two Blasting of Bloomfield College

CUTLERThe Georgian Court University softball team's offense decided to put on its best performance of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" Tuesday afternoon at home vs. Bloomfield College. The Lions (13-7, 1-1 CACC) could not muster a run in Game One, losing the contest, 1-0. The night-cap proved to be an entirely different story as GCU won the encore with a five-inning, 11-3 blasting of the Lady Deacons (12-5, 3-1 CACC).

03-22-09: GCU Softball Wins Three of Four in Back-to-Back Twin-Bills vs. Queens and St. Thomas Aquinas

KIRCHNER2The Georgian Court University softball squad rebounded from a disappointing Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at St. Thomas Aquinas College Sunday afternoon, dropping the Lady Spartans (2-9) 1-0 and 8-4, in Sparkill, NY. The previous day, the Lions trounced visiting Queens College, 8-0, in the first game of a twin-bill. However, GCU (12-6) blew a 5-4 lead, allowing three runs in the top of the seventh of game two and eventually falling to the Lady Knights (7-3).

 

 

 

 

03-17-09: #12 GCU Softball Suffers Sweep at #11 Kutztown University

LaFranceKUTZTOWN, PA-The #12 Georgian Court University softball Lions suffered a doubleheader sweep when they visited #11 Kutztown University Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Bears (18-5) topped GCU, 4-3, in Game One when KU's Steph Denlinger (Sr.-Harleysville, PA), the NCAA Division II career home run leader, launched a two-run dinger in the eighth inning. The Lions (9-5) would go on and drop the night-cap, 8-1.

03-11-09: GCU Softball Squeaks out Twin-Bill Triumph at Millersville University

GCU logoMillersville, Pa. — In both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against Georgian Court University, the Millersville softball team was knocking on the door of victory. In both games the Marauders came away empty handed, as the visiting Lions handed them losses of 1-0 and 5-4 at the Millersville University Softball Field.

 

 

03-09-09: Rebels with a Cause ... GCU Softball Commences 2009 Campaign with 7-3 Mark at Rebel Spring Games in FL

Rebel Games KISSIMMEE, FL-The Georgian Court University softball team returned to campus Sunday afternoon after 10 days in the Sunshine State nicely tanned, full of memories, and enough digital photos to illuminate a dozen softball fields. Yes, the young woman on the squad certainly had a time to remember on this spring-break journey. However, they also knew that this was a business trip, of sorts. And take care of business they did as the #20 Lions commenced the season with a 7-3 record at the 2009 Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL.

 

 

 

03-09-09: What a Start! Abbate, Ruch, Sansevera Earn Player of the Week Honors in First Week of Season

CACC logoWhat a start to the 2009 spring season! After a very successful beginning to the Georgian Court University lacrosse and softball campaigns, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) recognized three GCU student-athletes for their performances. Alley Abbate (Jr.-Shore Regional/Oceanport, NJ) earned the first-ever CACC Player of the Week selection for lacrosse for the week ending March 8th. In softball, Diana Sansevera (So.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) earned Pitcher of the Week accolades while Rachel Ruch (Fr.-Edison, NJ/Edison) took Rookie of the Week honors.

 

 

 

02-12-09: GCU Softball Ranked Second in 2009 CACC Preseason Poll

CACC logoNEW HAVEN, CT – Caldwell College has been picked first according to the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Preseason Softball Poll, which was voted upon by the league’s 13 head coaches. The Cougars picked up eight of the 13 first-place votes and 163 total points, while Georgian Court University was voted first on five ballots to finish second in the poll.

 

 

01-28-09: GCU Softball to Commence 2009 Campaign Ranked #17 in the Land by NFCA

GCU logoThe National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced today that the Georgian Court University softball team is ranked #17 in its national preseason Division II Top-25 poll. The 2008 CACC regular season champions (39-16, 22-2 CACC) finished the campaign ranked #25 after peaking at #16 at one point. The Lions begin the 2009 campaign on Sunday, March 1st at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL before competing in the Rebel Games, March 2nd-7th, in Kissimmee, FL.

 

12-10-08: Toms River East Star Pitcher, Lyndsey PeQueen, Signs NLI to Play for Lions

Lyndsay PeQueenGeorgian Court University head softball coach, Jeff Franquet, is pleased to announce that Toms River High School East pitching sensation, Lyndsey PeQueen (right), has signed a National Letter of Intent to play her collegiate softball at GCU, commencing with the 2010 season. PeQueen, a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) High School All-American and the 2007 Gatordade Player of the Year, is the winningest pitcher ever to come out of Ocean County with 80 victories through her junior year.

 

 

 

 

 

09/29/08: GCU Softball Named to 2008 NFCA Girls got Game All-Academic List

GCU logoThe National Fastpitch Coaches Association is pleased to announce the "Girls Got Game" All-Academic Teams, based on GPA's submitted for the 2007-2008 school year. Through this program, the NFCA honors high school and collegiate softball teams for their success in the classroom. The 2008 Georgian Court University Softball squad, with a team GPA of 3.14, ranked 46th nationwide among Division II programs.

 

09/22/08: Walker Still in Contention as NCAA Woman of the Year Nominees Narrowed to Top-9

Walker 092208INDIANAPOLIS – Heather Walker of Georgian Court University, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s (CACC) nominee for the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, has made it to the final nine in the NCAA's selection. The NCAA Woman of the Year will be selected on Saturday, October 18th at a banquet in Indianapolis with Walker and the other eight nominees in attendance.

06/25/08:NCAA Awards Walker with Postgraduate Scholarship

Heather WalkerINDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA has awarded Georgian Court University softball All-American Heather Walker with a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship, one of only 58 total postgraduate spring- sport scholarships awarded nationwide. The NCAA distributed scholarships to 29 male student-athletes and 29 female student-athletes who participated in spring sports, which included men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, baseball, and softball.

 

 

 

06/25/08: Walker Named CACC Woman of the Year

HWNEW HAVEN, CT – Heather Walker of Georgian Court University is the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s (CACC) nominee for the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, it was announced today by Commissioner Dan Mara. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Walker played both volleyball and softball for the Lions and she received numerous accolades for her athletic, academic and leadership achievements.

 

 

06/18/08: ECAC Announces 2008 Division II All-Stars

ECAC logoThe Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2008 Division II Softball All-Star team today. Lions' ace Samantha Sasko (Groveville, NJ) was named ECAC Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the ECAC First-Team while senior catcher Heather Walker (Hanover, ONT) also garnered a place on the First-Team roster.

 

 

06/12/08: Florez, Fortino, Sito, and Walker Represent GCU on CACC Spring All-Academic Team

CACC logoTheir collegiate careers have ended and they have diplomas in hand, but the kudos continue for the Class of 2008. The CACC announced its Spring All-Academic Team this afternoon, which included Georgian Court University softball seniors Autumn Florez (Manchester, NJ/Manchester), Nicole Fortino (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), Julie Sito (Elyria, OH), and Heather Walker (Hanover, ONT). In fact, this is the third time on this elite list for each of these student-athletes.

 

 

05/21/08: GCU Softball Ranked #25 in Final NFCA Poll of Season

2008 SoftballThe National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has ranked the Georgian Court University softball squad 25th in its final Top-25 national poll of the 2008 season. GCU enjoyed another stellar campaign, which included a trip to the CACC tournament finals and a spot in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Northeast Regional for the second straight season.

 

 

 

05/13/08: Walker Named 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA First-Team All-American

05/08/08: Lions' Trio Named to 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Region Team

The GCU Lions' softball trophy case may need to be expanded as new hardware continues to be added. The most recent honorees include Designated Player Nicole Fortino (Sr.-Brick, NJ/Brick Township); Pitcher Samantha Sasko, (Jr.-Groveville, NJ/Steinert); and Catcher Heather Walker (Sr.-Hanover, ONT), as they have been selected to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Northeast Region Team.

 

 

05/08/08: New Haven Ends Lions' Season With 2-0 Shutout

Stacey RyanBROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn.) pitched a one-hitter and went 2-for-3 at the plate as she led New Haven past Georgian Court, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon in game six of the NCAA Northeast Regional in Brookville, N.Y.

 

 

 

05/07/08: Sasko Named Daktronics Northeast Region Pitcher of the Year

SaskoSmithfield, RI- CACC Pitcher of the Year, Samantha Sasko (Jr.-Groveville, NJ-Steinert) has been named the 2008 Daktronics Northeast Region Pitcher of the Year, which was released this afternoon following a vote by the region's Sports Information Directors. Also a member of the All-Region first team, Sasko posted a 26-6 overall record with 260 strikeouts and 1.49 ERA in 191.2 innings pitched. Joining Sasko on the All-Region first team is teammate Heather Walker (Sr.-Hanover, ONT).

 

 

 

05/07/08: Caldwell Advances Past GCU, 9-6, in First Round of NCAA Division II Softball Championship Northeast Regional

Heather WalkerBROOKVILLE, N.Y.  – Georgian Court University put together a five-run fifth inning but it was not enough as the Lions fell to Caldwell College, 9-6, in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Northeast Softball Regional at C.W. Post Wednesday afternoon.

 

 

 

 

05/04/08: Casado Named 2008 GCU Athlete of the Year ... Walker Takes Home Presidential Award

The award was announced on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at the annual Athletics Awards Banquet at  Eagle Ridge Country Club in Lakewood, NJ. Also honored was senior Heather Walker (softball/volleyball), the 2008 recipient of the annual Presidential Award.

 

 

 

05/03/08: Lions Fall to Cougars in CACC Tournament Championship

2008 CACC ALL-Tournament Team (Stacey Ryan, Heather Walker, Samantha Sasko, Autumn Florez)CALDWELL, NJ (May 3, 2008) – Caldwell College exploded for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament record 18 hits in defeating top-seeded Georgian Court University today, 11-4, to capture the 2008 CACC Softball Championship. Tournament Most Valuable Player Nicole Bodrog led the way by going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and one RBI. With the victory, Caldwell has secured the CACC’s automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division II Northeast Region Championship.

CACC Coach of the Year, Jeff Franquet; Heather Walker (First Team All-CACC); Jessica Comiskey (First Team); Nicole Fortino (Second Team); Julie Sito (Second Team); Mallory Kirchner (Second Team); Samantha Sasko (CACC Pitcher of the Year)New Haven, CT- GCU Lions pitching ace, Samantha Sasko (Jr.-Groveville, NJ/Steinert), has been named the 2008 CACC Pitcher of the Year and selected First-Team All-CACC. Sasko was a dominant force for the Lions this year, posting a conference-best 26-6 overall record, 260 strikeouts, 191.2 innings pitched and a 1.49 ERA in 38 games (35 starts). Accolades are nothing new to Sasko this season as she was a two-time CACC Pitcher of the Week and Co-Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player of the Week this season.

 

 

 

 

 

04/30/08: Sansevera Earns CACC Rookie of the Week Honors

Diana SanseveraDiana Sansevera (Fr.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) has been named the CACC Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 27th. Diana, a righthanded pitcher, went 3-0 last week with victories over Caldwell College, Holy Family University and Nyack College, allowing only four runs in 22.1 IP (1.88 ERA) with 19 strikeouts. Sansevera's week culminated with a five-inning no-hitter at Nyack College on April 26th.

 

 

 

 

04/26/08: Lions Smash Nine Homers in Doubleheader Domination at Nyack

Danielle BrossoieNyack, NY  – Georgian Court University traveled to Nyack College Saturday afternoon and dismantled the Warriors , 16-1 and 10-0, in CACC women's softball action.The Lions blasted nine total home runs in the doubleheader sweep, including three by Danielle Brossoie (right) (So.-Ewing, NJ), who finished the twin-bill going 7-for-8 with four runs scored and eight RBI. Nicole Fortino (Sr.-Brick, NJ/Brick Township) also crunched three dingers of her own and finished her stellar day going 4-for-6 with four runs scored and six RBI.The other Lions' homers came courtesy of Jessica Comiskey (Fr.-Ewing, NJ/Ewing), Stacey Ryan (Sr.-Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial), and Heather Walker (Sr.-Hanover, ONT).

 

 

 

 

04/24/08: GCU Spilts Third Doubleheader of the Week

SitoJulie Sito's  (Sr.-Elyria, OH)  two-run double in the second inning and Stephanie Cuevas' (Jr.-Fords, NJ/Woodbridge) mammouth blast into the trees over the left field fence solidified a 4-1 victory for #20 GCU in game two of their doubleheader on Thursday vs. visiting Holy Family University (17-17, 14-6). Diana Sansevera (Fr.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) won her second game of the week and improved to 7-5 on the year, as she allowed only one run on four hits, while striking out six, in the complete game effort. The Lions (34-12, 19-2) fell to the Tigers in game one by the same 4-1 score.

 

 

 

04/22/08: Lions Go 1-1 in Twin-Bill vs. #13 C.W. Post

SaskoSamantha Sasko (Jr.-Groveville, NJ/Steinert) went the distance to give the #21 GCU Lions a 2-0 victory over #13 C.W. Post University (36-13) in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Georgian Court University.

 

 

 

 

 

 

04/21/08: Freshmen Shine as Lions Scrape Out Walk-Off Victory & Salvage Split

In their first appearance in the heated GCC-Caldwell College rivalry, Courtney Cuevas (right) (Fr.-Fords, NJ/Woodbridge), Diana Sansevera (Fr.-Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney), and Jessica Comiskey (Fr.-Ewing, NJ/Ewing) carried the Lions to a dramatic 6-5, walk-off victory in Game Two after dropping the opener, 4-1, to the Cougars (23-19, 13-5), at Georgian Court University.

 

 

 


 

04/17/08: Lions Split Two With Panthers in Battle of the Cats

Heather WalkerOn a glorious spring afternoon at Georgian Court University, the GCU Lions split its "cat fight" with the Adelphi Panthers. Adelphi (27-17) bested GCU in Game One, 8-2, while the Lions bounced the Panthers, 4-1, in the night-cap.

04/15/08: Better Late Than Never!

Stacey RyanWith today being Tax Day, the Georgian Court University Lions joined millions of others throughout the United States and decided to wait to the very last minute to take care of business. GCU was able to beat the deadline and not have to file an extension as the Lions swept the second-place Wildcats of Wilmington University in walk-off fashion, 8-7 and 5-4.

 

 


 

04/14/08: Sasko Rewarded for Week of Perfection

04/10/08: Another Sasko No-No!

SaskoGeorgian Court University swept host Bloomfield College,  15-0 and 11-1, in softball action Thursday afternoon. That is only part of the story.  GCU's Samantha Sasko (Groveville, NJ/Steinert) hurled a perfect game in the Lions' Game One, five-inning win, the fireballer's second consecutive no-hitter. Sasko also blanked Goldey-Beacom, 9-0, in a five-inning effort on Tuesday. GCU is now 23-8 overall and sit a top the CACC standings at 10-0.

 

 

 

04/05/08: GCU Softball Goes 1-2 on First Day of Tournament

04/03/08: Lions Split Twin-Bill at Queens College

Stephanie CuevasThe 16th ranked GCU Lions split a pair with the Lady Knights of Queens College on Thursday afternoon in Old Westbury, New York. GCU (18-6) won a pitcher's duel, 1-0, in the opener while QC won a slugfest in the nightcap, 11-6.

 

 

 

04/02/08: Lions win 8th Straight with Doubleheader Sweep over Philly U.

It wasn't the prettiest softball of the season for the Georgian Court University squad, but the Lions showed some tremendous mettle in earning a doubleheader sweep over conference-rival Philadelphia University, 3-2 (8 inn.) and 5-1. On a day in which the GCU bats fell dormant at times and the defense committed seven overall errors, the Lions (17-5) still walked away with their seventh and eighth consecutive victories and remain unbeaten (6-0) at home.

 

 

04/01/08: Sasko Named CACC Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week

SaskoMarch is a month known for windy days. However, the wind has been excessive on the Georgian Court University softball diamond this spring, courtesy of the opposition swinging at and missing Samantha Sasko's (right) fastballs. The GCU junior from Groveville, NJ enjoyed a phenomenal week last week, going 4-0 on the hill while compiling a 0.28 ERA (1 ER in 25.0 IP) and fanning 34 batters.

 

 

 

02/01/08: GCU Softball Receives National Recognition from NFCA

In what is believed to be a first in the history of the Georgian Court University softball program, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) recognized the Lions by giving them five votes in the compilation of its 2008 Preseason Top-25 Poll. GCU currently ties for 29th among ALL Division II softball squads, according to the NFCA, with the cracking of the Top-25 serving as an attainable goal for the team.

03/31/08: GCU-Molloy Softball Game Postponed

Today's softball game between GCU and Molloy College has been postponed due to the expected inclement weather. No make-up date has been announced. The Lions are scheduled to take the field again this Wednesday (4/2) when they welcome CACC-rival Philadelphia University to Lakewood for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 2:30 PM.

 

 

03/26/08: Nationally Ranked Lions Cruise Past St. Thomas Aquinas

KirchnerThe GCU Lions have arrived! For the first time since the softball program joined the Division II level, Georgian Court University has earned a place in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's (NFCA) Top-25 poll. The #25 Lions proved the NFCA correct with its domination over St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) on Wednesday. GCU swept the Lady Spartans, 8-0 and 10-2, in two six-inning contests.The Lions have now won four straight and eight of their last ten. Six of their last seven "W's" have been of the shutout variety.

 

 

 

03/30/08: #25 Lions Sweep Twin-Bill at Post U.

WATERBURY, Conn.-The #25 Georgian Court University Lions rallied from a 2-1 deficit to the Post University softball team in the nightcap of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, defeating the Eagles, 6-2, after taking the first game 5-0, Sunday afternoon at LaMoy Field. GCU has now won six straight contests.

 

 

03/25/08: Lions Use Long Ball to Beat Griffins Doubleheader

Nicole FortinoPhiladelphia, PA - Homeruns in the third and fourth innings of game one put Georgian Court University past Chestnut Hill College 3-0. The Lions took the second game 11-0 in five innings, as they scored seven runs in the third inning to take the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader.

 

 

 

03/24/08: Walker Named CACC Softball Player of the Week

Heather WalkerThe sun wasn't the only thing blazing in Florida last week. GCU's Heather Walker proved that with her scalding bat, going 23-for-40 (.575) with three doubles, two home runs (including a grand slam), 12 runs scored, and seven RBI in 11 games at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL. In recognition, Heather has earned CACC Player of the Week accolades for the week ending March 23rd.

Lakewood, NJ- The first annual Georgian Court University “Go to Bat for Breast Cancer” Softball Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 5th and Sunday, April, 6th, 2008.

03/18/08: GCU Splits Two in Florida

Kissimmee, FL – The GCU Lions went 1-1 yesterday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee FL, defeating Northern State University for the second time in two days, 8-0, before falling to the University of South Dakota, 2-0, in the night-cap.

The Georgian Court University softball program is on the brink of history! The Lions climbed one more spot in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 poll, moving from 27th to 26th among ALL Division II programs, leaving them one place short of inclusion in the Top-25 for the first time in program history. The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by NCAA Division II head coaches representing each of the eight regions. The Lions received 12 votes in the latest poll, released on March 11th.
