03-26-09: Foley selected to CACC All-Academic Squad
NEW HAVEN, CT – The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) has announced its All-Academic team for the 2008-09 winter athletic season today. A total of 19 student-athletes among the 13 conference schools earned the honor, including Georgian Court University's own Patti Foley (Sr.-Lake Grove, NY). Foley earned a grade-point-average of 3.66 as a Criminal Justice major.
03-04-09: GCU's Patti Foley earns Honorable Mention as CACC releases All-Conference Women's Basketball Team
NEW HAVEN, CT – Holy Family University sophomore forward Catherine Carr has been honored as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Year in voting conducted by the 13 CACC head coaches. Caldwell College freshman Kaitlyn Lambert was selected Rookie of the Year, while Holy Family head coach Mike McLaughlin was voted Coach of the Year for the 13th time in his 14 seasons at the helm. Chestnut Hill College claimed the annual Team Sportsmanship Award. PattiFoley (Sr.-Lake Grove, NY) was Georgian Court University's lone representative, earning Honorable Mention.
02-23-09: White named CACC Co-Rookie of the Week
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) has selected GCU basketball freshman, Christina White (right) (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick), as its Co-Rookie of the Week, for the week ending February 22nd. This is the third selection of the season for White as she also earned ROW honors for the week ending December 14th and February 2nd.
02-21-09: Lions' Nip Nyack, 70-67, in Season-Closing, Overtime Thriller
Lauren Staats (right) (Dunellen, NJ) waited until the final game of the year to have her best performance of the campaign as the Lions' sophomore guard drained a game-high 21 points, including the game-winning three pointer with three seconds remaining in overtime as the Lions (13-14, 9-9 CACC) dropped the visiting Lady Warriors of Nyack College (13-12, 6-10 CACC), 70-67, Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center. The victory, GCU's seventh over their last nine games, finish the 2008-09 season with their best record ever as a NCAA Division II program.
02-14-09: Lions Break Lady Deacons' Hearts in 64-43 Valentine's Day Rout of Bloomfield College
Georgian Court University returned to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center as the Lions stomped the Lady Deacons, 64-43, for their sixth victory in seven contests. Dee Varley (right) (Jr.-Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands) led the charge for GCU, coming within three assists (seven total) of the club's first triple-double of the season. Varley ended up with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, 14 of the defensive variety. Georgian Court's Patti Foley (Sr.-Lake Grove, NY) led all scorers with 15 points and completed a double-double of her own with 11 rebounds. Kiki Mayweather (So.-Lakewood, NJ/Manchester Regional) distributed eight assists in 24 minutes of action.
02-10-09: Lions do it Again ... Drop host Chestnut Hill, 65-56, for 5th Straight Victory
Philadelphia, PA – Chestnut Hill College played Georgian Court University to the wire in tonight’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, but the Lions avoided the upset as junior forward Dee Varley (right) (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands) carried the Lions to a 65-56 win and their fifth straight victory with 18 points. GCU has now won 11 games for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
02-07-09: GCU Cruises past Felician College, 55-41, to Secure 4th Straight Victory
Led by Patti Foley's (Sr.-Lake Grove, NY) team-high 14 points, three Lions scored in double-digits as the Georgian Court University Lions coasted past the visiting Felician College Golden Falcons, 55-41, and secured their fourth straight victory, Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center in front of a crowd of 234. Saturday was the 23rd annual Natonal Girls & Women in Sports Day at "The Well", which included a halftime ceremony honoring Georgian Court's five Hall-of-Famers.
02-05-09: Cardiac Kids do it Again! Foley Jumper with Two Ticks left Lifts Lions over Wilmington, 60-58
Is there a doctor in the house? For the third straight game, a basket in the final seconds lifted the Georgian Court University basketball squad to victory. This time it was Patti Foley's (right) (Sr.-Lake Grove, NY) turn as her jumper with two seconds remaining on the clock gave GCU a 60-58 win over Wilmington University Thursday night at the Wellness Center. The Lions, with their third consecutive CACC-conference win, improve to 9-12 (5-7 CACC) while the Lady Wildcats drop to 13-8 (8-4 CACC).
02-03-09: Barksdale Buzzer-Beater Bumps Lions by Chestnut Hill, 53-51
For the second consecutive game, Miesha Barksdale (right) (Jr.-Detroit, MI) played hero for Georgian Court University as her lay-up at the buzzer lifted the Lions past the visiting Lady Griffins of Chestnut Hill, 53-51, Tuesday night at the GCU Wellness Center. Barksdale also sank a lay-up in the final seconds of Saturday's 60-58 victory at Caldwell College. With the win, the Lions improve to 8-12 (4-7 CACC) on the campaign. Chestnut Hill College falls to 4-15, 2-8 vs. the CACC.
02-02-09: GCU's Christina White earns Second CACC Rookie of the Week Selection of the Season
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) has selected GCU basketball freshman, Christina White (right) (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick), as its Rookie of the Week, for the week ending February 1st. This is the second selection of the season for White as she also earned ROW honors for the week ending December 14th. White, a 5-11 forward, averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per-game in a 1-1 week while making 57-percent of her shots from the floor. She recorded 13 points and nine rebounds in a 60-58 win at Caldwell College, January 31st.
01-31-09: Barksdale Bucket in Final Seconds Launches Lions past Caldwell College, 60-58
CALDWELL, N.J. - A lay-up by Miesha Barksdale (right) (Jr.-Detroit, MI) with eight seconds left proved to be the difference as the Georgian Court University Lions defeated the host-Caldwell College Cougars, 60-58, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 7-11 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while the Lions end a four-game losing streak to improve to 7-12, 3-7 CACC.
01-27-09: Inconsistent Lions Drop 4th Straight with 66-62 Loss to Philly U
The Georgian Court University Lions watched a 28-23 halftime advantage, which included an 18-4 lead at one point, dissipate in the second stanza. The Lady Rams of Philadelphia University outscored the Lions, 43-34, thanks to 15 points in the half and three three-pointers from Philly's Amanda Brennan (Sr.-Stratford, NJ). Philadelphia University improves to 12-6 on the year (7-2 CACC) while the Lions drop their fourth straight and fall to 6-12 (2-7 CACC).
01-22-09: Turnovers turn in Lions in 63-37 Defeat to Holy Family
The Georgian Court University Lions knew that they would have to be absolutely perfect to challenge the defending CACC-champion Holy Family Lady Tigers, Thursday night at the GCU Wellness Center. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned as the Lions tallied 27 turnovers. Holy Family took full advantage of the mishaps, dropping the home team, 63-37. GCU falls to 6-10 and 2-5 in the CACC. HFU remains perfect against conference opponents at 8-0, 15-4 overall.
01-13-09: So Close! USP holds off Lions, 50-48
Erin Chesnavich's (Jr-Pittston, PA) lay-up with 6.1 seconds remaining broke a 48-48 stalemate and proved to be the game-winner as the Lady Devils of University of the Sciences (Philadelphia) held on to beat the host Georgian Court University Lions, 50-48, Tuesday night at the Wellness Center. USP improves to 6-6 (3-2 CACC) on the campaign. The Lions drop to 6-9 (2-4 CACC).
01-10-09: Lions Soar over Eagles of Post University, 50-35
Waterbury, CT- Dee Varley (Jr.-Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands) collected her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Kandace Johnson (right) (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) also drained a season-high 11 points, as the Lions braved the elements and earned a 50-35 CACC conference victory at Post University. GCU has now won four of its last five ballgames to improve to 6-8 (2-3 CACC) on the season.
01-08-09: Winning Streak comes to Abrupt Halt as Lions fall at Holy Family, 66-42
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Holy Family's Melissa Brooks (Sr.-Levittown, PA) scored a season-high 20 points as the Tigers defeated visiting Georgian Court University 66-42, at the Holy Family Campus Center Thursday night.
The Tigers have now won five straight games to improve to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the CACC and increasing its winning streak against CACC competition to 51 games. The loss snaps GCU' s season-high three-game winning streak and puts the Lions at 5-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
01-06-09: Lions Thrash Bears of NYIT, 77-41, for 3rd Straight Win
Georgian Court trounced the visiting Bears of NYIT Tuesday night, 77-41, giving the Lions (5-7) their first three-game winning streak since November, 2007. Patti Foley (Sr.-Lake Grove, NY), the reigning CACC Player of the Week drained over 20 points (24) for the second straight game. Christina White (right) (Fr.-New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick) dropped in a career-high 18 points, while Dee Varley (Jr.-Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands) had a well-balanced game with 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals.
12-30-08: Foley Drains Season-High 29 in Lions' OT Victory vs. STAC
Patti Foley (right) (Sr.-Lake Grove, NY) drained a season-high 29 points (13-for-18) in leading the Lions to a thrilling 81-71, overtime victory vs. St. Thomas Aquinas College (3-8) Tuesday afternoon at the Georgian Court University Wellness Center. After losing four straight, Georgian Court (4-7) now rides a two-game winning streak into the New Year.
12-18-08: Lions Pull off 61-55 Upset at Philadelphia University
Philadelphia, PA-In what automatically qualifies as the signature victory of the Valerie Curtis era thus far, Coach Curtis and her Georgian Court University Lions (3-7, 1-2 CACC) journeyed down to Philadelphia University Thursday evening and escaped with a 61-55 upset of the Lady Rams (4-4, 1-1 CACC).
12-09-08: GCU Struck by Lightning of Goldey-Beacom, 61-53, in CACC Opener
Georgian Court University opened the CACC portion of its basketball schedule Tuesday night, falling to the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College, 61-53, at the GCU Wellness Center. Christina White (right) (Fr.-New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick) garnered her second double-double of the young season, grabbing 10 rebounds and a career-high 14 points, in the losing effort.
11-29-08: Lions win 63-62 Thriller over Visiting Seton Hill University
In a holiday weekend matchup that had as much action as a Thanksgiving dinner menu has courses, the Georgian Court University Lions proved that they still had a unsatisfied hunger. Trailing by 14 points at the half (39-25), GCU feasted on visiting Seton Hill University in the second period, 38-23, and went on to put away the Griffins, 63-62, for their first-ever victory in their new home, the GCU Wellness Center. The win also gives Georgian Court its first two-game winning streak since winning three in a row last November (11/18-11/26/07).
11-22-08: Lions in the Win Column with 72-59 Victory at NYIT
Old Westbury, N.Y. - Ahh, the sweet taste of victory. The GCU basketball squad, after starting the season 0-3, earned its first victory of the 08-09 campaign Saturday afternoon, dropping host-NYIT, 72-59. The Lions (1-3) were lights out in the second half, shooting 68.2% from the floor (24-for-48) and 7-for-11 from the free throw line (63.6%).
11-19-08: Lions Drop Home Opener to Adelphi University, 49-36
After opening the season 0-2 in Alaska last week, the Lions returned home Wednesday evening to play their first game in the brand-new GCU Wellness Center. Unfortunately, home cooking did not do the trick as Georgian Court (0-3) dropped its home opener, 49-36, to visiting Adelphi University (2-0).
11-15-08: Lions Head Home after 77-33 Drubbing at #5 Alaska-Anchorage
ANCHORAGE – The Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team used a stifling defense to win their 2008-09 home opener Saturday, beating Georgian Court, 77-33, at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Saturday’s result was never in doubt as UAA jumped to a 7-4 lead and then held the Lions without a field goal for the middle 10 minutes of the first half. A 10-0 run late in the half put UAA up 31-10 and things would never get closer.
11-14-08: GCU's 2008-09 Hoops Season Underway ... Fall at University of Alaska, 60-54
FAIRBANKS, AK-The Georgian Court University basketball team was so excited to start the 2008-09 campaign that it was willing to travel almost 4,300 miles to do so. The Lions journeyed to, of all places, the great state of Alaska to kick off the new season, playing its first game Friday night at the University of Alaska, dropping a physical contest, 60-54, to the Nanooks. GCU boarded a plane to Anchorage after the game and will take on the University of Alaska-Anchorage this evening at 9:00 PM (EST).
10-31-08: CACC Women's Preseason Basketball Poll Released ... GCU Ranked Sixth in South Division
NEW HAVEN, CT - Dominican College and Holy Family University have been selected to win their respective divisions for the second consecutive season, as the 2008-09 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll was released today. The 13 head coaches conducted the voting. Both Dominican and Holy Family won regular-season division championships last season en route to facing each other in the CACC Tournament Championship game. Holy Family took the title. The Tigers have won three of the last four CACC Tournament Championships.
04/03/08: Hoopsters Named to CACC's 2007-08 Winter All-Academic TeamNEW HAVEN, CT – The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) has announced its All-Academic team for the 2007-08 winter athletic season today. Three Georgian Court University basketballers earned a spot on this elite list. They include sophomore Jamee Bush (top left) (3.56 GPA), junior Ashley Lobbato (center) (3.83 GPA), and junior Liz O'Connell (right) (3.77 GPA).
02/21/08: Foley Tallies 21 Points in Loss at Philadelphia UniversityJunior guard Amanda Brennan (Stratford, NJ) poured in a team-high 19 points while senior forward Ashley Webster (Philadelphia, PA) added 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, leading the Philadelphia University women's basketball team to 69-50 win over Georgian Court University in women's basketball action on Thursday night. The win improves the Lady Rams to 17-8 overall and 10-6 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) while the visiting Lions fall to 7-19 overall and 4-13 in league play.
02/19/08: Nyack Cruises Past GCUNyack, NY – Nyack College defeated Georgian Court University Tuesday night, 75-49, in CACC women’s basketball action. With the win Nyack improves to 10-14 overall and 7-8 in the CACC. GCU falls to 7-18 overall and 4-12 in the CACC. The Lions now have a season-high, five-game losing streak.
02/13/08: GCU Suffers 4th Consecutive Loss with Defeat at USPThe University of the Sciences in Philadelphia led wire-to-wire as they won their second consecutive game, 66-52, over Georgian Court University Wednesday night at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. The win evens the Devils record at 12-12 on the season and improves their record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games to 9-6. The Lions fall to 7-17 overall and 4-11 in league play.
02/09/08: Lions Begin Five-Game Road Trip with Loss at Bloomfield CollegeBloomfield, NJ- The Lady Deacons of Bloomfield College scored a victory over the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University 70-53 at the Bloomfield Gymnasium. The Lady Deacons shot 56% from the 3-point line in the first half and opened a large margin by halftime which proved to be too much for the lions to overcome. The win improved the Lady Deacons to 12-11 overall and 8-5 in the CACC North Division. Georgian Court falls to 7-16 overall and 4-10 in the CACC South Division.
02/09/08: GCU Bids Farewell to The Casino with Defeat to Goldey-BeacomAfter 82 seasons as the home of the Georgian Court University Lions, The Casino hosted its final basketball game this afternoon, a 67-49 defeat to Goldey-Beacom College. The Lions (7-15, 4-9), who have played in The Casino since 1926, will begin playing in their brand new athletic center next season.
02/07/08: Lions Play Gutsy Basketball in Loss to Undefeated Holy FamilyDon't get fooled by the scoreboard. Yes, GCU (7-14, 4-8) fell to the undefeated Holy Family University Tigers (21-0, 12-0), 82-50, but there was no way that the Lions were going to lose lying down. After getting blown out in the first half, 46-18, GCU almost matched the #7 team in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll in the second half, falling short, 36-32.
02/02/08: Varley's 30 Carry Lions to Victory Over Chestnut Hill CollegeThis was the type of game Valerie Curtis had in mind when she took over the head coaching reigns at the beginning of this season. Dee Varley (So.) (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/St. Francis College-NY) led the charge for the Lions, scoring a season-high 30 points, including an impressive 8-for-9 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the first half, in GCU's 67-49 victory over visiting Chestnut Hill College, the club's most complete victory of the campaign. Sr. Stephanie Longdo (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) made history when she drove the lane for a lay-up with 4:19 remaining in the second half, eclipsing the 1,000th-point mark for her career. Longdo came into the game needing three points, and finished with six total points, 9 rebounds and a team-high 9 assists. Freshman Ta-Shee Harden (Aurora, IL/Aurora East) poured in a career-high 17 points in the rout.

01/23/08: Lions back in win column after mighty comeback at Chestnut Hill CollegePHILADELPHIA, PA-The GCU Lions and Chestnut Hill College sat even, 18-18, at halftime. The Griffins came out of the locker room and staked a 15-5 run to grab a 33-23 lead six minutes into the second half. The Lions dissolved the Griffin advantage over the next five minutes and held the lead through the remainder of regulation for a 51-47 win.
01/15/08: Lions tamed by University of the SciencesErin Chesnavich (Pittston, PA/Bishop O'Reilly) showed a glimpse of why she has earned CACC Player of the Week honors two weeks in a row. While the 6' 1" sophomore did not have her best game from the field (3-for-13), Chesnavich dominated the boards with a game-high 16 rebounds, including 10 of the offensive variety, and dropped in five of six shots from the line to lead the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) to a 59-47 victory at The Casino over the GCU Lions. 6' 1" Allison Weiss (Jr.-Springfield, PA/Springfield), drained a game-high 15 points, including an impressive 9-for-11 at the foul stripe and seven rebounds, while local product Caitlin Shaw (Fr.-Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) tallied 14 points and a perfect 6-for-6 in the free throw column.
01/12/08: Lions lose to Post University in gallant effortLauren Staats' (Fr.-Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen) three point attempt at the buzzer rattled around the rim, but would not drop in, allowing the visiting Post University Lady Eagles to escape The Casino with a 52-49 victory over the host Georgian Court University Lions. Stephanie Goss' (Jr.-Manchester, CT-Manchester) basket and successful free throw gave Post University a 52-49 lead with six seconds remaining in the contest.
01/10/08: GCU suffers deflating loss at Columbia UnionRiding the high of Tuesday's exciting road win at Felician College, the Lion's were looking to use that momentum to carry them to victory on Thursday in Takoma Park, MD vs. 1-12 Columbia Union College. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned as GCU succumbed to the Lady Pioneers, 57-48. The victory served as revenge of sorts for Columbia Union as they fell 69-58 vs. GCU at The Casino back on November 18th.
