Important Financial Aid Information for 2012-2013

Follow These Steps to Initiate the Financial Aid Process for the 2012-2013 Academic Year

  • Complete and file your 2011 federal tax returns for both the student and or the parent. For optimal filing, submit your taxes electronically. After approximately 10 days, the data will be stored within the IRS data base and you will be able to transfer the information to your FAFSA using the IRS DATA RETRIEVAL TOOL.
  • File your FAFSA at
  • Sign your FAFSA with your PIN and your parent’s PIN if you are a dependent student
  • If you forgot your PIN or do not have one you will be able to retrieve it or apply for a PIN
  • Avoid mistakes and delays by carefully reviewing the information on your FAFSA before you submit the FAFSA.

IRS Data Retrieval Tool

  • All applicants and parents who indicated they have filed a federal tax return will be directed to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
  • Applicants and parents who indicate they will file a federal tax return will receive email communications directing them to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update their income information once they have filed their 2011 federal income tax return.
  • Electronic Tax Filers will be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool within 10 days of filing their taxes
  • Paper Tax Filers will be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool within 6-8 weeks of filing

Who is Not “Eligible” To Use The Tool

  • Married couples who file separate tax return
  • Applicants whose marital status has changed as of January 1, 2012
  • Applicants who are neither eligible nor required to file a 2011 Federal Tax Return
  • If anyone filed an amended tax return

Applicants Who Elect Not To Use The Data Retrieval Tool Or Change The Income Information

  • If you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and change the information you will be informed that you must explain to GCU why information you changed is more accurate than the information available through the IRS. You may be selected for verification and required to submit additional information.

Report Information Required For HESAA On Your FAFSA (NJ Tuition Aid Grant-Tag)

  • When you get to the confirmation page of the FAFSA, pay attention to the section asking you if you would like to report information to your State Agency. You will be directed to complete additional information for HESAA. The information you provide will be sent to HESAA and you will NOT have to separately complete the questions on the HESAA website.

New Changes For Completing Verification Process

  • If your FAFSA is selected for verification you and/ or your parents must request an IRS TAX TRANSCRIPT from the IRS to submit to the Financial Aid Office to verify your information. The transcript is free and if you order by telephone or by mail you can have the transcript mailed directly to GCU. If you order by phone you can only have the transcript delivered to your address.
